Vancouver Saltchuck?

Hey oceanranger were you in the blue and white searay that pulled up and talked to me?

Yes that was me. I talked to every boat on the way back.

As far as the prawn purchase we made - it wasn't intended to spark any controversy on this board. Commercial prawning may well be closed but the boat we bought the prawns from was a commercial fish boat - likely a converted gilnetter being skippered by a vietnamese guy. He may not have been commercial prawning at all even though he had a prawn dragging net hanging off the back of his boat - he may have been pulling recreational traps because we didn't actually see his gear in the water - in which case he shouldn't have sold any of his catch but he did.

Those guys have been fishing Shrimp/selling them off the dock @ Steveston for a while now so they do have licenses to sell to the public.

Today was my first day out in a week. I went straight to the Point Grey Bellbouy. I lost 4 fish in an hour! I don't usually lose fish. The first one was a screamer and I played it for about ten minutes before it popped the hook. Then I got a double header (single handed), and lost them both. The last one I got right to the boat, grabbed the line and it was gone.
I just don't know what happened today, after I lost the first one I filed the hooks to make sure they were sticky sharp.
Then at about 10:00am the killer whales showed up and the fishing was pretty much over. I counted about 20 orcas.
Oh well, it still beats staying home and doing my laundry.

Wow, seems to be a trend here. I would say you lost a couple of fish just because you were single handed. Still sounds like you had fun.

good to hear fishing was good at the t10 because, sunday at the capilano it was horrible. saw two fish caught all morning. we fished from 6am to 1pm with only shakers.

My son was pretty proud of this one . He rarely comes out with Dad but finally on Sunday he did. We got out a bit late but still managed a crack at 3 of then but only this 16 lb hooked up well.

fished the s.arm in the a.m pretty windy till noon, nothing but dogs.anyone know if it was blowing in the harbour or the bell might go out tommorow if its calmer over that way thxs.

Fished from the t-10 to sandheads and down to the coal port on sunday...she was rough for sure, glad we didn't run across to thrasher. Lots of shakers and a couple of nice undersized but that was it. The whales came through the coal port around 4, right up tigth on the coal ship, pretty cool to see, nice to see no seals all day...lol but the salmon were just as hard to find.

Hopefully gonna go out after work thursday with a little lady luck onboard and then Sunday for a shot.

T-10 went off last nite with a great mixed bag...lady luck paid off in spades!
Had triple header with a sockeye, pink and a hog spring. My daughter lost the spring and we boated the others...nice sockeye. I lost another big spring that came unbottened after screaming off about 100 yards. Came home with a nice 15 pound spring. Little bit rough but doable...we were the only boat out there...anywhere from 35 to 70 feet...right at tide change.

Thanks for the report getbent.

What were the sea conditions the day you hit your fish? What were they hitting on and how deep?

It's nice to hear someone is having success.

The Berry's bait fishing hotline (604-638-5899) has been errantly reporting good fishing off the fraser mouth for quite some time now even though nobody seemed to be catching fish a week or two ago. I remember the same thing last year Berry's bait said that the fraser river mouth was producing healthy nimbers of springs but after 3 hard days fishing the only one we managed to hook got tag teamed by two seals right beside our boat. When we went into steveston to take on fuel the guy at the oil dock said there were no fish out there at the time and I think he was right.

I rarely get skunked but the last few years have not been kind. My boys are finally old enough to reel in their own fish now and I can't seem to get one for them. The summer is almost done for the kids and I still haven't completed the mission. I will be going out again next week and I have to get my boys a fish this time. They are losing confidence in me. They said going fishing is slipping down the list of their favorite things to do. I have boated many nice fish with them before they were able to handle the rods but now they are ready to reel in their own fish.

Was out on Friday morning from "O:dark thirty" in the morning at the Bell Buoy.

Had a couple of light hits which didn't stick and managed one just barely undersized springer pretty early. We were among the first 2 boats out there and when the rest of the fleet showed up we didn't see any nets in the air until we buzzed out.

The wind was a bit chilly out there considering most weather reports said to expect a 5km/h wind when I last checked online about 11pm.[}:)]

Hey swiggy I wish you luck, I had one ripped here in ND a couple years back, then my buddys a couple days later with controls and all, it was bolted to the boats.Carma should get those scumbags if nothin else does!!Fellow boaters in the area keep your eyes and ears open.:(

OceanRanger...it was a windy with the incoming tide so a bit of cross chop, a little rough running back up the South arm. The fish were hitting anchovie anywhere from 35 to 70 feet. A friend of mine was out thursday day and landed 2 spings in between the bell and QA and lost two others, both were mid 20's. I was targeting springs and was still picking up pinks and sock's. Go into crabpot bay at hightide with some pink gear and you should hit pinks.

I was out from 6 till 6 yesterday and got one pink, lost 2 or 3 others and again lost two large springs, one at the t-10 and one out between the markers. I heard of 4 or 5 springs taken yesterday. lots of seals around again...now that the whales are gone.

No more all dayers for me...just the tides. We were going to run to thrasher but it was looking just too fishy where we were.

getbent,

Thanks again for the report getbent. I am thinking I will give up on launching from steveston and go out from mcdonald beach instead. The T10, QA and point grey are a long way from the south arm and it seems that is where the action is at least for now. Over the years the south arm was the best place for sockeye but it doesn't look like we will be getting a crack at sockeye this year.

I used to run across to thrasher alot too and have had good success there as well as the Nanaimo side of Entrance Island but I am reluctant to make that trip now because of the cost of fuel. My boat is an absolute pig on gas - that 350 magnum gets me there in a hurry but it comes at a big price.

I am hoping to get my boys out again this week and I will report back on our results. I just hope it isn't too lumpy because my youngest boy has a weak stomache. I do know what you mean about running across to thrasher though - whenever I come out from the river mouth and the seas are calm - thrasher is just so inviting.

I have had alot of success over the years with plugs, hoochies and spoons. I don't use anchovies too often because they are a little more high maintenance and more prone to catch dogfish. I like the plugs because if you get one its usually a big one but hoochies and spoons have served me well too. I have a little 4 inch green splatter back silver horde plug that was my secret weapon for years and it rarely failed me until the last few years. I fish with four lines so I usually put two plugs out one side and hoochies or spoons out the other.

Thanks again

I went out before daylight yesterday and fished the bell to the QA and back to the mile markers. Picked up 95% of a 7lb chum. 5% missing had teeth marks! Didn't see any nets anywhere around.
Went out today afternoon and decided to burn the fuel and try sandheads. It was a little rough running south but ok for trolling. I picked up a 12lb spring in 300 ft of water, down 50ft on anchovie.
I had just put on a fresh anchovie and the fisheries boat came to check me out. They asked what I was targetting and if I caught anything. Then they measured my fish, checked my hooks and my license. They told me that they haven't seen many fish caught.
I told them where to go and which boats they should be checking for illegal and undersize fish.
I told them I was glad they were out and checking, then took their picture.
