Vancouver Saltchuck?

Launched out of Steveston Wed. morning at 6:30. Sea was flat calm. Didn't see any fish jumping but there were plenty of seals. We bring a slingshot to defend our turf from them. We fished from the Sandheads lightship all the way up to the North Arm jetty. The sounder showed plenty but we only managed to get two grilse at least we were able to release one of them unharmed with the other a casualty. Lots of jellyfish but no keepers.

I have had alot of success over the years with plugs, hoochies and spoons. We used them all. One of the grilse bit the white hoochie the other on the little pink one. We used several different plugs, hoochies and spoons of all different sizes and colours but all the usual favorites failed us.

I usually do not target pinks but I had my 13 and 14 yr old boys with me and I really wanted to get them a fish so I decided to try pink hoochies through the schools thinking either pinks or sockeyes but still not even a sniff. Started to think these big clumps of fish showing on the sounder may in fact be schools of jellyfish because the gear was covered in jelly remnants all day. Both pinks and sockeyes usually can be seen jumping everywhere when they are present and we saw no jumpers at all.

We finally pulled up our gear and gave up around 6:30 PM. I stopped to chat with every boat we came across and not one fish on any of the boats. In fact not one fish on any boat all day. I think that the heavy rain a few days ago sent all the fish up the river and we will need another stretch of sunny days with no rain to build up the numbers again.

We saw a commercial boat prawning on the way back so we stopped and bought 5 lbs of fresh prawns so at least we were able to enjoy a feast of fresh prawns when we got home. It was a nice day on the water - the seas were calm all day and that was good but there are no fish.

A bit off topic, but I pretty sure commercial prawning is long closed!

....

eastpoint,

I just got a phone call from a buddy who was fishing around the bellbouy this evening. He says all he caught was undersized and had the same indication from all the other boats in the area :(
I'm stuck on the shore for this week and next working long days so I'm hoping that the fish arrive in a week and a half from now.
Hmmm...fresh pizza for dinner tonight!

Hey all, I've been out last two nights at the lightship,2 dogs,1 sole, and one mackerel,on Tuesday,1 pink and 1, 8lb spring Wednesday. First mackerel I've ever caught, water temp getting a little too high I guess. side note I see the same shrimp dragger out there every time I'm out there seagulls swarming him the whole time,I'm assuming thats who oceanrangers talking about.

Fished the Bell Buoy/Mile Markers tonight...just off the water. Didn't see anything...zip...nada...zilch.

Cap mouth might have some new fish, check that out. Read a report of some coho- pinks in the area if interested. Cheers, Jimbo[8D]

Things are grim, pretty rare for you to get skunked. [:0]

What I said earlier about those horseshoes!

;)

I was out Tuesday from QA to Cap and in between. Didn't touch anything or see any action around us. Talked with a Fraser River guide today and he told me the springs have been very plentiful in river for the past week (averaging 4-6 per day). They must be swimming right by us on the ocean!Maybe they need pizza or something different to bite on?

I may try the T10 for the first hour tomorrow morning..then head to Sandheads.

These fish don't spend a lot of time off the mouth of the Fraser...they're there..and then they're G-O-N-E.

The albion fishery is showing lots of springs in their test sets. Since there seems to be lack of action off the north arm and south arm, maybe they have chosen Canoe Pass for a change, which could make the coal port a good spot?

I was thinking Snadheads and around to the coal port may have some action...checking my journal...it is about this time (and the next few weeks) that it has worked for me in the past.
Thinking of heading over to Thrasher for a shot on Sunday as the weather looks to be decent.

Sure springs are plentiful when you are snagging them in a narrow channel of water. [V]

Brisco...I'm glad you said that! I was beginning to think that the fraser river fishermen had more skill than the ocean guys

Went out Fri mid-day until almost dark. Heard that the Red Can Bouy off Point Grey was giving up some fish. So we ran out there instead of West Van Ambleside where we had planned to go. Got two rods down and right away fishon. Nice scrappy jumper, 7 lb. pink in the boat. Didn`t even have a chance to open a beer yet.

Two rods back down, added 3 and 4. soon enough big fishon. My buddy got him near the boat to see the chinook body and big tail. Played it a bit and then he slipped off and was gone. Reloaded and fairly soon again, this time it was my turn, same thing big fish staying deep then races to the boat and just disappears. What a drag. Some small shakers for awhile and another chinook bight that did not stick. Then it just died off. Fishing blue teaser anchovy and spoons, Glo-green and Flamin Hans. 50 To 100 ft but action was around 50 feet.

Off to WCVI in about 7 hours.

Good to hear Eastpoint! Too bad some of the big boys didn't stick.
Have a good one on the other side.
