I think we have been spoiled over the last two years with the coho run. Especially the amount of hatchery Coho, seems to be significantly less this year so far. I am hopeful it will pick up though. We ran across and fished Thrasher on Sunday afternoon- hit it at about 3 pm until 645- two hatch in the box and released a few-after some dowrigger issues I went to the old slip weight that I dug out of the bowels of the box and it was actually great lol-
it seemed to tail off pretty good - not near as bust as 2 weeks prior- I am guessing it was a little slower as reports are a little soft-
The lack of bait or arches on the screen was similar for me.First time ever fishing South Bowen on Saturday - came home with 3 hatchery fish. 38', white & green splatterback hoochie. Worked the contours, slowly moving out. Seemed to have most luck in 350-400 FOW. The fish would just hit the line out of seemingly nowhere (no bait on the sounder...). Is this normal for this area? Or does the bait start to congregate later summer?
I was running one in the prop wash the other day with no luck, but I’m gonna keep trying itHas anyone tried fly fish off of a boat to catch coho around Bowen or Gibson? Just wondering if I can use a fast sink like type 7 to reach those burgers.
I haven't done it, but I know people who have. You probably only need an intermediate sink if the fish are slashing the surface, which is pretty common. Same approach as if you were casting from shore.Has anyone tried fly fish off of a boat to catch coho around Bowen or Gibson? Lots of fish have been caught on the south side by bucktailing. More active when there’s jumpers though.Has anyone tried fly fish off of a boat to catch coho around Bowen or Gibson? Just wondering if I can use a fast sink like type 7 to reach those burgers.
nice cohoBite was great tonight off south Bowen, got these three in just over an hour. Flash fly and small hootchie at 33 and 49. View attachment 118364
The only thing I caught with the third rod running a bucktail in the prop wash was a flasher teaser set up I forgot to attach the mainline that I threw overboard. I’m still going to keep trying as well as I caught an coho attaching my line to the downrigger clip this year.I was running one in the prop wash the other day with no luck, but I’m gonna keep trying it
