Out off Oak Bay today. Spent two hours feeding dogfish only to lose the only halibut beside the boat. Fishing alone has it's drawbacks. As for lingcod, found the obvious pinnacles void of life but managed to find one little nest that yielded a bunch. Too bad I tapped the first legal ling, as they only got bigger. Hopefully they stick around. Released the biggest Cabazon I've ever seen. Ferocious attack but then like pulling up a five gallon bucket.

They say the "Tug is the Drug" and that's the truth..... Today at 10 Mile Point I hooked into a nice fish..... Finally !!!
It hit at 3:00 pm just as the tide was slacking off. Caught on a 3" Light Perch Buzzbomb with a small strip of UV
mylar tape on half of the white side of the lure.
a good 20 minute fight, Held it in the net and then a quick release. . Aprox. 20 - 25# fish

Although I hate doing catch and release I needed the TUGG
I’m so happy to see this. I know you worked hard for that one, and a fish of that caliber makes it all worth it, regardless of retention. Hopefully I’ll catch you there again soon!

Thanks Jeff,
It was a fun one that's for sure..... I'll be back to ten mile soon..... I'm sure I got a bit of sun stroke
just from the long hours I put in there ;)

I broke my 2024 skunk today. My usual boat envy was soon dashed when we helped pull his boat out to deeper water at the launch. The rowboat is easily launched at the lowest tide. ;)
The addition of an electric trolling motor has taken the edge off catching fish while rowing.

No Coho today. Marked a few fish in front of Esquimalt Lagoon. Released a small spring ~5lbs.
Small (1-3") bait fish everywhere on the surface.
Edit: I trolled into the prop wash wake of the Cruise ship today. I was curious about any injured bait-fish given the amount of 1 to 2" minnows jumping at the surface from Sax point to the green can. Sure enough there was a trail of scales floating in the water and the odd injured silvery minnow twisting about. There was a herring spawn off Ft. Rod Hill this spring.

Was curious where do you launch? Do you launch off James Bay angler’s launch? Haven’t been there for a while. Was thinking taking my pontoon out there one day…
Thanks,

Fished the mudhole today 7-1pm. The dogfish were thick. We had 2 dogs on one rig numerous times. Finally around 12 we picked up one hali. Also managed a cod. The weather was perfection and lots of humpbacks.

Is that a Tom cod or P cod?

I have got them before but never kept them. Curious if it was any good.

I am glad to see some Hali being caught! I am headed out early tomorrow.

Fished out of Oak Bay Saturday and Sunday. Just jigging Saturday with my kiddo. Two lings, the biggest 16 Lbs and several rockfish, one of which I impaled my my finger on it's spine. That friggin hurts for about an hour.
Sunday got up a little earlier, trolled the flats and had one flurry of action around 7:30. Two low teen Chinooks. Both clipped and both on Herring aide skinny G's. Other than that not another bite from salmon. Headed out to yesterday rock. Released a couple of 70 cm lings and ended up keeping a 17 lb. Currents got too strong for Hali fishing.IMG_20240713_174509064.jpg
