If you get the water for it Porlier, Thrasher and Entrance have all had fish in the last week. largest tubbed was 18 pounds.

Fish slightly larger spoons to keep the grilse and shakers away. Glow Blue and Green Spackleback Glow have been good Hoochies. 120-220 on the wire.

Learned Ones - Hello!

I have prawned two traps the last 6 years in the general vicinity of South Bowan. My average yield is 40 prawns per trap, based on soakings twice per month - usually both traps on one line. Same secret bait all the time.

The last 3 times I have been out (over the last 2 months) I have had 0 spot prawns, and perhaps 2 shrimp in each trap - same secret spot around South Bowen.

Questions for the Learned Ones is:

- Is there a possibility they got wiped out from the commercial opening?
- Do they move away, even though staying put for 6 years?
- Have they become vegetarians?

I'm confused, looking for guidance.

Thanks!

Simple answer - try another spot . Make sure your traps have been weighted properly .

Definitely would not consider myself an expert on this topic, but I have learned a couple of items which I’m happy to share. It seems like as the other members point out, having a weighted bottom is really important. Those prawns don’t like the cage rattling around on the bottom. This is probably going to trigger different opinions, but I just feel like the box style traps out perform the netted cylindrical traps consistently. Maybe that’s just me. In terms of a spot, give the east side of ragged Islands a try where the contour shallows up as you approach the island.

Well there’s fish at Grace. 2 hr this morning, 2 for 3 (64, 70cm). 200-220’ on the rigger, in 200’ of water a bit closer to shore than my usual tack there. This combo got all the hits. Beauty day, not too late to get out there.
Winter feeders are like coho, the scales get knocked off easily. Trail Head spoon and chartreuse blade, a great winter combo. Are you charging them up first, or just natural sunlight?

and i had to sit and watch as needed to take a buddie to hospital at lunchtime so would of been at Grace oh well .... well done

Guess it wasn’t a “secret spot”

Forgot to mention, I tried prawning Fri in my nearby secret not-so-secret spot nearby there. Also got zero in 2 traps which is odd. Either a really slick poacher or likely just fished out for now by the commies?

I've noticed a reduction in number & size this year vs last year. The commercial boats & floats were out longer this year then years past in my typical spots. I don't know anything about their regs, maybe they got a longer extension vs years past? Most of my trapping is southern gulf islands, and saw (what looked like) commercial traps up indian arm into september.

Poachers or FN's but there isn't any monitoring now, that is only seasonal. No fisheries boats out patrolling.
