2025 OFFISHALL Vancouver- Howe Sound-Sechelt Fishing Reports Thread

What gets me right now is all those people fishing for Pinks and hoping to hook a hatchery Coho off Sandheads right now. Chinooks are closed. Chums are currently non-existent. Pinks are abundant. Hatchery Coho are rare. Sockeye are currently closed there.

So…. WHY on earth are so many boats fishing Sandheads? Fisheries are going to be all over you and literally harass you out of there. Fish elsewhere.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should- and there is a reason you don’t see guides there until September 1.

Flaming is going to begin on me- but hey- I said what I said.
I always thought that Sandheads is popular with the Fraser Valley crowd who trailer boats for a daytrip. Shorter drive and shorter run to the fishing area. I'd rather be fishing almost anywhere else...
My honest opinion is that people are still completely clueless of the regs and probably wouldn't be able to identify any one of those fish anyway.

I agree with your point, but honestly I don’t think there’s that many guys who do this. I cross the SOG regularly thru the summer (south arm to active pass) and cruising right by Sandheads there’s really not that many boats. IE last Wednesday evening (5:30-6pm) it was flat calm out there, there was 3 boats fishing. If chinook were open there would have been 100+
Like I said, I agree, and I don’t fish it. But I do think most people respect the situation.

Might be a bit off topic but my 2 cents..
What's the point in using that language "no fishing for chinook" if we're not supposed to fish for anything in that area?
What's the difference between fishing the bell or cowan for hatchery coho and sandheads? Chinook is closed in both so why is it morally okay to fish in one place over the other?
Just close sandheads to all fishing until Sept if there's an issue?
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I don't understand why people think we shouldn't be fishing SH for open species.? Looking to be educated!

It's because the "politics" of all this BS aren't made public. And nobody will touch it with a 10 foot pole for fear of being branded something. That's why the guides just avoid the area, because they know what those conversations are really like. It's a sad state of affairs, for everyone.

Fair.. But the average angler probably isn't up to speed on all the politics and therefore shouldn't be shamed for following the rules (not that we're shaming them).
Either way, I wait for September. Thx for sharing RC.

The debate often says "if DFO checks you out and you are running bait or big spoons and long leaders, you have some explaining to do" as you're clearly targeting chinook. I don't want a whole sub area closed to all fishing. These forums have helped, I see more people sharing rules and regs than before, with lots of shaming if someone shows a chinook in the box while reporting from SH.

Isn't that situation more the fault of the regs though?
If there was an effort to simplify things and have fishing basically 'open' or 'closed' in areas and times we wouldn't have half these issues.

Thank you for expressing that as I totally agree

Anyone out fishing the bell today? Gonna get out tonight and fish the Sox gear , more excited about pulling on the chinook bycatch than anything else to be completely honest

Yesterday was calm enough to make the rip over to Thrasher, in hopes to catch a slot chinook. Threw everything we had (bait, hootchies, and a Tomic 602 plug on the bottom) across the water column. Fished shallow, fished deep - spent a good 3 hours. 6 fish to the boat but none of which were keepers (either wild coho, or small chinook). About 5 other boats out and I didn't see a lot of action on their boats either. I suppose the nooks made their run for the Fraser, or maybe just weren't interested? Maybe I'll catch up to them on Sep 1st. We are almost there!

Sorry. 20 boats. If anyone finds a green MR2 attached to a Loomis mooching rod off the Bell that my grandson somehow managed to knock out of my rocket launchers with the net ….let me know. About 200 meters north of the Bell. Expensive day.
I had a similar situation this year. I feel your pain
