Where are guys fishing when they say Gambier? At Grace or just along the South end?
 
I finally got out today after after an epic break. Close to four weeks since, with all the ice and bs. I brought the pregnant wife out so I had take it very easy. We dropped a couple prawn traps and played around with the new puller. Then decided we're not going keep any fish today because we're not eating enough. I'm doing a kitchen reno and fish hasn't been agreeing with my pregnant wife, not much has been getting eaten. We also had only a couple slots left on four licenses. So I played around with new tackle and new areas. I almost got one nice fish on a duarbait. But I never set it properly and lost it. But felt heavy. In 175 feet of water just outside the bay the ferry leaves from. 180 on the rigger. We checked the traps after 4 hours and got 180 keepers. Made the wife happy...All and all an awesome day.
 
Couple of shakers in the freighters , fished tungstall, hutt, grace, salmon rock .. didn't drop the traps , snagged some old ghost gear and it's creations
Then there was fog... mill pond sea state... Great to be back

someone told me no prawn or crabbing in those areas starting today . And down rigger restrictions starting April . Not sure if it’s just for the 5 new sponge reefs ?

They're just adding more areas to the closure list. These aren't huge areas and mainly not in the most productive parts of the Sound but I see this as part of the "death by a thousand cuts" program. Not sure how much "consultation" has been happening with the SFAB but the timing of the notice is definitely questionable. Issued on Friday, effictive as of today!!

For the last few years, we haven't been able to retain Chinooks after April 1st anyway so let's enjoy the winter fisheries in area 28 while we still can. :confused:

I am a retiree, 2 years of getting the boat ready, purchase (cheap) new leg, get EVERYTHING working as new, new downrigger, trap puller, traps, reworked all the Penn reels and new line, one new really heavy duty rod and line for halibut, nets, the works, old time 9.9 yamaha 4 stroke kicker that I have had for over 20 years with only 70 hours on it, new remote steering, really nice 25' Searay Express cruiser, like a big runabout not a cabin cruiser. (rare)
Finally got it all set to go, my brother says he doesn't like the ocean and asks me to go up the river from Mac Beach.

BIG MISTAKE!!!!!, 10 minutes in hit a submerged tree, a branch lodged under the leg, couldn't figure out why it would not plane and the motor was working so hard. a branch about 3 inches in diameter was between the leg and transom.
Broke the Gimbel ring, luckily on top one side and beneath the other of the pins.

Got another whole set up but can't get that stupid cotter pin out of the lower gimbel pin.

Hopefully as soon as I save up enough to get a mechanic to take it out, so far two different guys have said $1000.00, so I am also buying all my own tools for this.

Of course I don't have a yard to work on it so I tow it to the street.

What we do to chase fish eh?

your brother doesn't like the ocean? Tell him the ocean don't like him either.
Also Tell him you don't like that particular river too.

Have to remove the engine and the entire gimbal assembly :(

That really sucks I've replaced the gimble housing in my boat once before and am doing it again as my gimble ring is cracked,I took it in to be welded but it only held a few seasons,anyways if you don't have access to the steering shaft and arm you can't remove the gimble ring without removing the nut that holds the steering shift and arm in place. Some boats have enough room in the engine bay to access it others like mine don't so the engine needs to be removed,or some guys cut the gimble housing to access the nut wich seems like a sure fire way to have a leak...anyways probably a discussion to be had on the boats forum just sharing my knowledge as it's the next project after re assembling my engine.

Is your boat insured? Your insurance will probably cover you for that if you have a decent policy.
 
Anybody ever try west van or by fisheries this time of year? Just wondering if it would be a complete waist of time trolling around the light house point there? Thanks
