Pounded the trap to the island solo yesterday. and today with the old salior around the sooke big four out west. Burnt 7 1/2 packs of bait for one wild ho and a big feeder spring. Profisher joke of the day may have to wave the 15ib restriction for Vic Island Classic and open it up to the pinks LOL. Where are the big whites and the Sooke Fish? Anyway chin up boys got to git better. Cheers Fc

OHHHHHHH MY GOD it is slow out there im managing to get 1 or 2 but there are smaller teens and a 21 today I have no clue where the hell they have gone very scary especially with these tides!!!!!!!!
just got to keep pounding but its grim,
Im really thinking that that is it if it doesnt pick up in a day or so im thinking that "run" isnt here or there passing us by way out.
Just like last year fish were gone first week of sept this may be the case again!!!!!

Last year when this happened my grandfather hit 2 high teens and a 33 pounder on the second tide line 145 ft on the down rigger over 2 seperate days of fishing. Just somthing ive been thinking of trying soon if they dont show up.

Fished Otter yesterday from first light until early afternoon with no luck on the springs. Lots of small springs and a few pinks. Back to Otter today. Picked up a 24.5 lber just west of Otter just before noon today at 76 ft. After that lots of small springs. Back on shore ran into some folks that had a 24ish as well however from Possession. Next year I think I'll book the vacation days a tad bit earlier.

Out again today with Ryan and my other son . Ryan had 4 coho over ten pounds that were wild [V]and about a 12 pound white Chinook [:p] kept 3 hatchery and a couple of pinks . Man was there alot of shakers out there .

To Wolfs comment on "maybe they are out deep and passing by"
Friend of mine dropped by on the way home from Renfrew late afternoon and was quite tickled that they got 2 springs in the mid 20's fishing for pinks in 400 ft of water at 70ft off of the Botanical Beach in Renfrew !
Maybe ......... just maybe Wolf hit on the head !

Guys, please be careful with those small ones. These are gonna be our big fish over the next couple of years. No need to complain then about the lack of fish if we slaughtered them today...

Out tonight with my buddy and his son to try and let the boy catch some pinks, so we went straight out to 500ft. First fish was a 11 pound hatchery coho on a bad boy spoon--90ft. What a grin on his face. Only other keeper fish was a 11 lb spring on the same spoon.

Agree! so many idiots netting small springs and coho's out their in sooke, they just don't get a clue! . So many floaters what a shame.

Hi Tailspin,
You were saying that you have found them as deep as 150 feet and that is deep for this time of year(I think) and are you finding them at 150 feet when your in 160 to 180 feet type thing or are you farther out by the pinks in 400+ feet of water? One more question to anyone who knows.... Do Salmon tend to mix themselves up.... I mean do Springs like to be with Pinks? or do you think the Springs will move out (or down) when a school of Pinks show up? That might explain why the Springs can be found so deep even though its summer time. Maybe....lol.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

Finally got my act togethor and spent the last couple days fishing out of Cheanuh. Small fish was the operative word. Couple of pinks, some smallish hatchery coho, couple of small springs and one decent (20.5 lb) spring. The 20 pounder came out of the meat hole, hit a 4" Cop Car Coyote being trolled with a 6 ounce slip weight (almost like the old days). Darn fish hit the spoon, spit it, and then the hook impaled it in the side. Or so I figure the sequence.
Thought it had to be upwards of 35 pounds at first from the way it tore off the line and then sounded and sulked on the bottom. Took better than 35 minutes to get into the boat.

A ridiculously large number of shakers. Changed gear and depths numerous times to try and avoid them, but they would hit anything and everything from a pink hoochie to a Coyote everywhere from 25 feet to 140 feet.

Do you think there are an exceptional number of these around this year? I don't remember this many in past years.

Sorry for the short reply, my one year old is helping mr type,

Out towards the first tide line 300-450 mark, intercepting the migratory fish just cruising by to Puget Sound or the Fraser etc. They are on the move for the most part now looking for the fresh... The whales also push the fish deep or into the structure in tight.

Public Service Message:
To echo some of the scuttlebut here....the feeling around the fish cleaning station at Becher wednesday night was "Big springs were deep" Guy there had a beautifull 29.5# at 120' off Bedfords and lost another one that was =.
For all the Spring salmon doom and gloom on this thread, 1/3 of the returning boats had a spring. + limits of pinks and coho. Thats not bad. What all the bitching about?
Some of you guys are getting jaded. If you don't catch a 30# every day you're pissed off ?
If I was going tomorrow..... (which I am not because I'm working dammit!) I'd fish the tide changes on a long leader and I would try for awhile, something deep.
I took a guy out Wednesday who had never landed a salmon before. He was hooting and hollering and high fiving about 5 # fish!!!
He reminded me what I love about this sport.
Enjoy your weekend boys

Smiley just check out my web page everything is on there spring is just around the corner LOL LOL,

Now as for fishing got my spring yesterday but lost it at 47 ft on the rigger there just isnt alot of fish out there its very bad!!!! and were not bitching its aug and we are used to seeing EVERY boat come back with a spring even some with even more.

Smiley i was out calling ya today, not on the water? Well as for fishing its been pretty good for me. I was out lastnight and hit a 15# pound spring(White) in 5 mins, then my buddys rod pops and its a 10 pound hatch coho. Then the wind became was to strong and i went home. Back out today and same thing, first five mins 16# pound spring (marble) and hit about 14 cohos around 10 pounds including a doozie of a double header off big bedford island. both wild about 12# and 14#. Not a single pink for us thought. Ive switched completely to spoons for the reast of the year, and seem to be having best luck for both springs and cohos on the Nasty Boy 4" coyote. 100ft on the rigger.

Back out there tomorrow AM. Ill be calling smiley.
