Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Hey, good to meet you briefly at the Consultants derby Vicboater.

Was slightly slower off Sooke, rather than the crazy action it can sometimes be for pinks. Had one gal and her dad aboard, got her into a half dozen or so, with a few landed.

Went out into the deep water off the Harbour mouth, up to 400' first, then found more in 150' off the bluffs. A few big bait balls right on the surface, tried for coho with a surface spoon, but no hits.

BIG grin after she caught the first one...then after the 5th in a row complained she was getting tired of reeling in fish...ha ha!

Fishing was slow for saturday and Sunday. Had nice boat rides both days with loads of jacks both days. No smilies, only saw a couple caught .
Pinks were thick at second tide line.
Oh well back to Abbotsford with hopes that Bamfield will be a better show on Sept 15th

Went out last night. Slowwww was the optimal word. Not a bite to be had.
But there was a lot of feed around and if you have a bird phobia don't go out there...there must have been 3 or 4 patches of birds each ranging in the thousands feeding on the herring balls.

Was out fishing around the trap on Sunday morning and picked up one at almost 21 pounds. Caught a few pinks who thought they were spring salmon cause they bit on spring gear in close to shore. Found a small bait ball on our way to check the crab traps and managed to net a bucket full of 3 inch herring.... too small for bait. Gave a lot to my buddies wife as she knows what to do with them. Great day on the water!!!

Fished Otter to Sheringham and back this am. Didn't hit a spring until trolling back between Muir Creek and third rock at low slack. It was high teens maybe 20. Let this one go. Back on shore I heard of a few boats picking up a spring here and there but overall pretty spotty. Like Octapi said, sea gulls everywhere.

if you guys are getting sick of the salmon fishing results hali is still going well, hit a 30 today and lost another. Tides were great!

Hey Dewar,

can you E -mail me those Pics? They were taken from my boat by Glen from Martech at Otter Point. That big bull rubbed alongside that campion after it took the fish for a good 40 seconds. I have not seen that type of action this far South ever. It was truly an amazing experience to see. Two whale fully breached clear of the water just before that within meters of us. Unreaaaaal!:D

Bigmeal.... Hi Ken, Yea we had a good day on the water all right. Kept the same gear on all day and it finally paid off for me. (Green on Green) Good going for selling your little outboard already.... didn't last long at all. Will you be going out this Sunday at all? Looks like I'll be heading out then to try and catch a big spring. If you see me out there.... give us a yell. Don't have VHF working but you can reach me on channel 15 on the CB. See you out there..... Steve.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

The guys in the campion are good friends of mine. Quite a story the fish was a 15, which they ended up getting in the end. After about 45 seconds when they went to start fishing again the whale was still under the boat. Let me know if you need more pictures of the event unfolding as the pic is one of a series of 8.

Another butt for me today, 17 fathom, got a small 18 pounder, but still a good catch. got it 5 mins before we were gonna pack in. currents were rippin out there today, deff shouldent have been fishing there, but made the mistake of say..."it will slow down in a half hour or so...never did. but still managed somthing out of it.

no doggies today, but 4 small rock cod, and 2 cabazons.

Tailout also picked up a nice one as well

Nice and calm out there tonight.

Derrick is definately a good partner...it helps having an extra set of hands when it comes to netting
