We were out Saturday, got 7 pinks and 1 Hatchery coho and release 3 baby springs. Back out today and more baby springs, wild coho and a few pinks. With all the boats at Secretary and Possession, we did not see many caught although I understand better fishermen than us caught the odd big spring.
We have caught a couple of coho that look like they had been given a botched clip job by the hatchery. One had a very short pointed shaped fin and the other had most of the fin removed but they left a long narrow strip like a turkey beard sticking up. We released them both but I am curious what other people do with these and what DFO’s position is. Not too hard for us to release a couple of 6 lb-ers, but having to releasing a 15lb coho with almost all of its fin clipped off, now that would really hurt.
A 15 pound Coho is a big Coho for this time of year, i have let about 3 or 4 big sockeye over 10 pounds this year. Might it have been one of there with a portion of its fin missing for natural causes?
