Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

We were out Saturday, got 7 pinks and 1 Hatchery coho and release 3 baby springs. Back out today and more baby springs, wild coho and a few pinks. With all the boats at Secretary and Possession, we did not see many caught although I understand better fishermen than us caught the odd big spring.
We have caught a couple of coho that look like they had been given a botched clip job by the hatchery. One had a very short pointed shaped fin and the other had most of the fin removed but they left a long narrow strip like a turkey beard sticking up. We released them both but I am curious what other people do with these and what DFO’s position is. Not too hard for us to release a couple of 6 lb-ers, but having to releasing a 15lb coho with almost all of its fin clipped off, now that would really hurt.

A 15 pound Coho is a big Coho for this time of year, i have let about 3 or 4 big sockeye over 10 pounds this year. Might it have been one of there with a portion of its fin missing for natural causes?

Sorry fishflyguy89, we released a couple of smaller coho with partially clipped fins. We did not actually catch a 15 lber. The point was that it would be much more difficult to do with one that size.

Picked up a 34 & an 18lb in the fog somewhere between Beachy Head and the Trap Shack this morning. Broke the hook off on another screamer aswell.
Ran out of bait, so we switched to Pinks and were off the water by 10am
Cheers

lost a hog in Beecher Bay (guess 27-40lb) - wore him out as much as I could, but was with my 8 year old and in a 12' tinny...had him sideways, but with the chop, 6' + leader and trying to net myself just couldn't cut it. Had him 1/2 in, but he rolled and wrapped the cannonball...that was the end of it. Some pinks and a 8lb spring to take home at least.

I was up there yesterday (Sat.) fishing Renfrew, good morning bite lots of springs being played out.. we had 3 good springs on, lost them all ! They were not sticking, friends boat he lost 3 springs, another boat we know lost two, another boat came on the radio said he lost two springs at the boat, another boat we talked to lost 3 springs... saw another boat play a big spring out behind the boat for awhile... pop! gone.. ohh was he pissed... I can'nt repeat what he was yelling ! Very weird day, one of those days where the springs were not sticking well.. Either way the big springs were there! Buddy I fished with he was out on Friday, he landed 3 in the high twenties.. had a triple header on of big springs, landed one spring, had a few others on as well, his friend same day Friday had a 40,30 and two in the teens. So ya I'd say the fish are coming.. from what I saw looks good hope these spring come down quick to Sooke!

Actually they started showing up last week, my fishing buddy up there had a 38lber. the day before the derby last weekend.. as of Yesterday I was told so I quote what I heard(personaly did not look at the board my self) "there were 10 springs over 40 on the Renfrew marina board"... So ya, get ready Sooke.. I think there on there way@!@!

Hi Rock, glad to hear you at least had some excitement up there. Were the fish all on bait, or were any of those new hoochies working for you?

Fished Secretary and Possession today and finally picked up a 29.5 lb spring on a Glow Army Truck Hoochie at 1:30 pm at fifty feet on the downrigger. :) Also got the usual assortment of pinks. We switched to hootchies after using up the bait on the pinks.

Back home today ; my fishing partner fell and really sprained his ankle badly getting into the boat Saturday morning thats why our 5 day trip got reduced to 3 !
Worked hard out there between 2 miles East of Otter Point up to Shearingham , a Godawful pile of boats around Otter Point did not even want to get mixed up in that cluster f*** !
Tough go this time had 4 very good hits on purple haze hootchies on 40lb test at 70ft behind Abe and Al's , lost them all !
Hard to get through the pinks and coho around Muir Creek on Sunday morning must have released over 20 in 45 minutes , later on ran into a pack of small springs feeding on anything ; same go around.
Anyone run into a tin boat about 18 to 20 ft ?(Thunder Jet) who has no idea about rules of the road on the water ? ....came out of the fog at me on my Port bow and continued right across me forcing a hard tack on my part to miss a thud ! Don't people know you give way to the red light when your green light is juxtaposed to it ? apparently not !!!! heard some chatter on the radio about "flatlanders" that morning not caring where they went ........... maybe this should have gone onto the etiquette thread SORRY !
Went on out to the 400 to 450 depth and hunted for coho , found a bunch and went to spoons ( green/chrome 4in and Dymar glow black with white squiggles on it) released 6 got about a 6 lb hatchery and lostt several beside the boat.

We hit the water hard this weekend and looks like the fishing is picking up.Saturday we fished 5-4 and picked up a 37 and a 17 early then nothing else the rest of the day.Sunday 5-12 didnt get a sniff.Yesterday was on fire.Took my brother out for the first time this year 10-130.We hooked a 25 right off the bat which I somehow managed to bash off the line with the net[V]Ended up with a 26 lb whitey and a 12 before we started taking waves over the bow and had to head in.Seemed like a pretty good bite out there at Possession.

Out yesterday. Fog, wind, tides, weeds and pinks made for lots of work.
Looks like it's picking up for springs there was a fair bite on around 7am.
Lots of pinks and more coho than the past week. You don't have to go far out for the pinks and ho's.

Tips

Those whales came on the inside of me in Beacher and within 40 yards. My guest (from Alberta) had a fish on right when they came through. I laughed and told him to hold on to the rod... that pink might just turn into something big in a second. LOL!

Tips

a better morning out there/.....picked up a 25lber, a 12lber for the kid to enjoy...he wanted a Spring after all his pinks the past few days...so that made his day:D

back at the dock by 930...seen another couple with a 35, 18-20ish and 2 around the 10-13 ish

Out monday morning, was fenominal out there, everywhere you looked from aldridge to the head, there were fish on, from first light-1pm. I hit a 10 pounder at about 6 am, right off aldridge 40 ft on the rigger, blue chrome teaser head, 8 ft leader and a betsey gold flasher. At 7:30 my rigger popped, anf nothing there so i grab the rod and start bringing it in to check the bait, and right in the prop was, Boom about a 20 pounder grabs my chovy, and starts screaming, 100 feet back, it lumps and spits the hook :( Around 8 hit another nice one at 40 ft, same set up, 19 pounds, weak fight swam into the net. Then at noon my dad hit a nice 22 pounder, this one made up for the fight on the 19. my buddy also left with his limit of 4 "Sprinks"(Huge-Pinks)[:p]

Amazing day on the water hope the winds slows so i can get out for my daily night bites at the trap.

Flyguy, I almost always fish out of Cheanuh. Which boat are you in? I don't have vhf are you on the CB at all? (Channel 15) I just want to say hi.... don't know anyone personally on this site. I was hoping to be out next weekend (the weekend before the Bite Me derby) But last trip out on Saturday I was trolling near the head when my steering cable broke and had to come in early on the kicker. Not alot to report.... lots of shaker springs and a handful of humpies for the smoker. I'll be fishing from a 17 foot Arima Sea Ranger with a red canopy top. ... Steve.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

Sea ranger, i am in a 18.5 double eagle.
Brown top. 150 yammy and 9.9 yammy. I only have VHF. im not fishing the derby, but will be fishing. I will keep my eyes open for you, and give you a hollar! i usually have my bright orange winchester hunting cap on. So im highly visable!
