Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Smiley, i was acctually at aldridge all morning was to rough to get to the trap early. We hit some nice fish in the morning. my dad nailed the 22 around noon!

What boat are you in?

-Steve

If your looking for springs one word SLOW!!!!! seems like there are little pockets of them again where 1 boat will hit 3 when none for other Im getting them but having to work for them not a real snap where ALL boats are getting them.
Word from up west is bad lots of shakers that gobble up bait a good sign for years to come but not right now more of a pain in the arse than anything as you will put bait down only to bring it up and its been hit by one of the little buggers makes a LOOOOOONNNGGG day.

NOW if you want action its "on fire" for pinks out there so go load up for the smoker or for canning.

I was out today at sec saw maybe 8 springs in total caught very 1 was mine tragic for this time of year, just keep waiting it will turn around soon I keep telling myself!!!!!

Good luck wolf

No Rigours

Fished Possession yesterday morning and this morning.

Yesterday saw a bunch of teens-20s caught at sunrise in tight to the point, heard of a few 20s caught towards the Bluffs later in the ebb.

Today we caught a 10 pounder, only saw small ones or pinks caught.

Still lots of pinks around, endless action out deep, a few close in too.

Well back from a very successful trip to Nootka Sound, kinda wish I was still there. Friday morning a bit slow but managed a 24 and lost another. Started the afternoon trip with the crowd in the hot spot for the last week but after an hour and a half only seen Cal get 2. Decided to play a hunch and make a move. From 3:40 to 5:10 we landed 28, 25, 24, 21, 14 and 10 pound springs, lost 2 more. Fish were on as fast as you could get gear in the water once the bite started. Only a single pink too! Had to be the fastest flood current I've ever seen, bite started just after peak flow and start of reduced flow. No whales today as they were apparently in Active Pass, finally the fish could come out for an afternoon show.

Nice morning on the water today. Flat calm and easy tides.
Lots of coho around but not many hatchery. Saw a few springs caught and had 1 around 30 spit the hook beside the boat after a good fight.
Pinks everywhere. Never left the shoreline.

Bait is costing me a fortune this year!!!

Tips

Beautiful day! Spent from 5am-7am trolling from bedfords-church. Hit many small springs. Boated one about 9 pounds. and a bunch of pinks for hali bait. Pulled the gear ran to William Head..Dropped the pick, and fed the dogfish for 5 hours. Currents were suprisingly slacker then expected! Pulled the anchor and trolled home, hit a few pinks on the way. Saw a few early morning caught springs at the cleaning station, nothing major though.

No larger springs for us at the trap and the head today. Lost one that could have been a teenager or a larger coho - never got to see it. Hit some very nice ho's - clipped ones too. The rest the usual bag mix. Saw only once decent spring at the cleaning table.

Fished Fri and Sat off Posesion and the Harbour Mouth, 6am - 12pm.
Friday hit a 13lb spring at 11 15am(low slackish)Chartuse head and Betsey, 6ft leader, 60ft. Fished in between 90 and 100ft of water, caught a few pinks and released a 9lb sock.
Sat - Had 2 springs in the boat by 630 am, both on betsey and Jimmy Gilbert chartruse head, 28 and 14lb's, 55ft,6ft leader, 8pck bait(big). Hit another spring at 730am, 25lbs, 40ft, green hot spot, Rhys Davis chartruse head. Fished in between 130 - 150 ft of water back and fourth off the triangle and harbour mouth. Lots of guys having a sniff more off the Bluffs...... On Friday I saw about 6 springs caught just west of Poss, earlier. Did not see a ton of spring action on the water or at the cleaning tables today. Lets hope the guys fishing the flood wil hit some hoggs this afternoon!!

ton of everything today (except big springs and hatch ho's). Secretary was literally non stop off the tip - much more active than the tidelines...mix of everything, small springs, shakers, wild coho's (one about 8), piles of pinks, and a nice sock thrown in. Was a late start, so didn't count on any hogs. Noticed a dead seal in Becher as well....

Fished the shack to iron mine today from 3pm til 8pm bait every where! Landed a 24 and a 22 lost four others and at the end a 8 pound hatch coho. Fun afternoon.:D

The afternoon flood definently seems to be the time, heard codfish hooked 7 up at Muir yesterday afternoon, 80ft, blue haze hootchie and bait on the other 2 rods, hootchie worked best. Know of another guide that smoked'em off the island a few nights ago too. Hoping to get out for an afternoon sniff this week, good luck to all for that once in a liftime fish....come on 50!!
