Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Out last night from 6:30-9:00. Lots of pinks around. Could see them jumping all over the tide line. Got a 20lb right tight to the Head at 9:00.
Out today. Did not see a spring caught. Released some wild coho and caught a bunch of pinks. The pinks and coho seem pretty small right now. Less coho around for me. They were bigger the last few weeks.
The tides/currents are strange. Felt like I was bucking it both directions at times and there were huge tide rips because of this. Lots of bait around.

Tips

Out Yesterday at the trailer park from 8am till 2 and pretty slow. A few pinks but no springs. Got lucky trolling home and picked up a halibut on the salmon gear.

Ya Luna there was a bit of a bite at the Lighthouse. Most fish were teenagers, but saw about 15 fish taken in the morning. I see your Dad got second place in the Rangers, nice. Luna the 50# will be taken by Team Westcoast Buds in the SSC on Labour day weekend !!

Tournament Proven !

Out solo today. Decided on a run west to the light house. First tack coho and pink killed a eight pack of chovie. Things slowed down on second tack untill around 8:00. Hit my first spring around 18 ibs. Then twenty minutes later took my second spring around 23 ibs. Blasted back to the head put down the pink gear and finished the day!
Cheers Fc.

Nice job in the derby Luna! As for that 50.... well my luck says it'll hit your rod that weekend... just hope your not too pissed to reel it in! [:p]

There was a 47 weighed in at the otter point resort yesterday.:D
Wow, that is a pretty BIG deal. Could very well be the biggest out of sooke for the whole year. Does anybody recall the biggest confirmed spring for sooke last year?
Hey Fins, you guys did well yesterday too, good job. I still think you and the Wild One should mount your loot on the Willie, lol!! Cheers

Out Saturday for a bit of a trip with some friends. Day was a great one . Hoped they also had a good time! Fish was a mixed bag of Coho, pinks , Sox, and Springs. All in varying sizes. Didn't have to wait for than than ten minutes between fish. In all we got to play no less than 50 fish for seven and a half hours of fishig. Great day to be on the water.

....so much entertainment that I decided Sunday would be awsome for my wife and two children. Got on the water by 9:00 am . Off the water by 11:30. Again , a mixed bag including all species but sockeye and chum. The whole family got a chance to play more than a few fish. Some descent size springs as well for tideline action. Maybe a couple dozen fish to the boat. Released all but one pink for my son to dress and eat.

Again another beautiful day on the water.

Out off Secratary Sat from 5:30-3:30 more pinks and small springs and coho's then you can dream of. kept my 2 Cohos and 2 8 pound springs. Lost one pin popper at about 8 am.

Out Today, Secratary 5:30-2 Less action today. But took a 10 pound spring and a 8 pound hatch Coho for the BBQ. Dad lost a nice spring about 17 pounds in the tidelines 1 mile off secratary on a pink Hootchie.

All in all a great weekend to take a few neewbie's out and get them into some action. Lets hope we get some more steady Big spring action soon.

Also heard there was a 47 on friday. And there was chatter of a 50.5 on sat at Otter. Anyone confirm this?

We hooked quite a few pinks / coho trolling for springs in close off Otter / Muir. REALLY SLOW for springs. Didn't see a single spring netted today.

1 pink for the pot for me early early today at Secretary/possession, that's it. I think I saw 2 ? babies with that pod that went thru--interesting to see them mimic the adult behaviour.

Hit one 20 lb Spring off the head around 630 last night at 90 feet, Creel guy said he had not seen a Spring in 3 days[xx(] pinks everywhere in tight as well, tough to run bait. Today was slow for Springs, did not see any caught, lots of pinks, a few coho and even a sockeye to release. Hope some of those fish move down from the West Coast soon, Uci is on bloody fire!

Hey Guys
First time caller... long time listener.
Does anyone know how the wind has been between the Race and Sooke in the PM during this heat wave? Got regected twice last week due to winds. Taking a long time river trouter out tommorow from the mountains who has never seen salt water... should be fun.
If I'm lookin on Bigwavedave.com for weater for this area, is the closest report Gordons Beach??

Your wisdom is appreciated
Thanks a bunch!
