Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

was out last night with the kids targeting pinks.
Went out at 2 - couldn't get around Beachy head, winds were making it rough, started on the East side of Beachy and trolled East. Made a turn and came back, by 3 the waves were at least 6' if not 8'. Most of the boats were pushed way back in the bay. It comes up real fast and real snotty even when the forcast doesn't look intimidating. Be safe out there if you plan on doing an afternoon fish. Turn your back for a bit and the weather changes real fast.
BTW the kids brought in 6 pinks in 2 hrs and would have done better had we been able to stay further out.

there is a derby sat and sunday

What derby would that be? might just go out Sunday late then.......avoid the crowd.

Cheers

...and this may be a dumb question, but will all the boats be targeting springs for the derby prizes? I ask because I'm going out with a rookie and we may want to target pinks further out (and hopefully away from the crowds).

Whenever I want to fish when there is a derby I just head out a couple of hours after daybreak. Everyone is already out and the ramp is quiet. As for pinks, even if lots and lots of boats are targetting them, the Strait is still a pretty big place and won't be crowded.

Weird fishing yesterday.. Gear in at 6:30 near race. A few passes for springs around christopher and whirl bay for one shaker. Headed out after that and made it all the way to the border off the head then back in to 1-2 miles off church and all around the race. Not a hit!
No pinks, coho [B)]
Lots of fish showing 250+ range and they didn't look like doggies

No more flatlanders on my boat :D

Yes it was.... wouldnt have thought for a minnute that it would mess up the fishing that much. We did stick around for the first little bit of the flood but to no avail.

Was kinda lame seeing the parade of fish at the 100 metre mark on the sounder.. I could have fished them but not legally

A funny though, I almost corked a bear...... with the boat. Just on the outside of the Pearson college dock :D

Out this am --started at Muir and then went to Sheringham for not much. Shaker springs, wild coho and pinks.

No Rigours

I was out at the first tide line and didn't have as much luck. We got 1 hatchery in the boat and released 1 wild coho. Had five coho next to the boat and they shook off. Where were you and what were you using to get those pinks? I was fishing about 40 feet of water.

when you get to Beachy Head, point towards the states, start trolling - you should hit them when your depth sounder is around 450-500. Tide lines work good too. Do lots of turns and figure 8's. Seem to catch more on the turn.
We pink hoochies, googly eyed wild things, and today we tried the old school big pink round spoon. If all you had was pink hoochie, then you will catch them. We tried different sizes and they all worked about the same.
set your lines at 45 and 65.
If you are not catching them, maybe put the line further back - boat voltage problem.
Funny, we didn't hit any coho - and we make sure we identify.
For us, if we didn't have one on in any 20 min span, we were doing something wrong (kelp on line etc).

Fished Possession and Muir yesterday. Usual collection of pinks, cohoes and a couple of small springs released. However I got a surprise at the end of the day as we were trolling back to Sooke with my flyrod out the back for fun. I was trolling a green and white Coyote spoon with a four ounce weight on the rod doing about 3 mph when I had a great hit. Thought it was a good sized coho at first (because I have caught several cohos with this set up this year) but I was wrong. The fish sounded and started to head shake. Sure enough it was a spring and a 20 pound spring at that. Landed it after about 20 minutes. Crazy thing is that this fish took in the top 10 feet of the water column. Go figure.

Thanks 2muchdraft, That really helps as I am fairly new at this game. I will give those methods a shot next time I am out. My wife and four year old still had a blast. My four year old reeled in his first coho (with help of course). :D

Sorry just read the post yes anything pink squirts are by far the best I run a huge hook on them a 6/0 single as it is a nice thick hook and tends not to rip there lips off and once on there good to hold I find the smaller hook tends to rip right through as it simply too thin.
Last week was getting them as far down as 100 ft just keep changing your depths once you get on them just keep circling them thats where the gps/plotter really comes into play.

Im out tommorow and the next day Aug. 1 ill be out every day as i have a month off of work thankd GOD

Good luck Wolf

Fished this morning from 615am - 1130 am, saw 5 fish caught off Possession between 645am - 745am, tight, approx. 70ft line or less right off the point, W side, lots of bait shallow. Saw 2 fish caught off the inside of the Island (front W side) around 11am, close to low slack. One was ours, 22lbs, green haze flasher and blue/green/chrome head, 1 hit 1 spring, lame!. Saw another landed off the harbour mouth 1/2 hour after. Did 2 tacs outside, earlier (400ft), switched to hardware and speed up to find a bang, slower. It has slowed down out there in the last week (off sec), last Sun, Mon, Tues, were silly for coho and pinks. EB? Maddog?. Still slow for Springs but I saw more today than I have throughout the week in that area. I guess here is to being hopefull for a big run of springs coming soon....

Thank you to all the sponsers, cooks, bartenders, ect. for the Rangers Derby today!! Hope to see more guys out ther next year. Good prizes, good food, good B.S, and some o.k guys(lol!)...

Out today 4:55am rods in. Bang 5:10am in tight otter point beach 35 ft, 48 ft of water, betsy and green and yellow head. 22lber awesome fight. 7:35 bang 50 ft on rigger, pulled line while in rigger unbelievable as my drag was so tight, big fish, lost spit hook, Muir creek. Trolled to Sheringham had so many coho and pinks it was ridiculous. In tight at Sheringham lost a screamer. really good fish. Again spit the hook. Dam it. Oh well awesome day. Went through tons of bait. Didn't bother with hardware. All fish from 35 to 65 ft. Weather was great. Mostly used green and betsy. The odd bloody nose. You never know what is going to hit your line. Be ready at all times. You never know what is going to hit. 3 big hits and got one only. The rest were cohos and pinks. No Hatchery cohos. Wierd.
