Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Salydawg , I grew up using the heavy leaders for hootchies and spoons , several old commercial trollers were friends of my Dads and their rationale was that the heavy line gave a more pronounced whip from the flasher, the other method I will use is piggy back a hootchie on the back of one of those "tomic" flatfish (forget the god***n name of them!) that along with the heavy leader gives a real pulse to the hootchie skirt and is deadly for coho and will on occasion attract a spring , hit one with that combo off of Wizard Islets in Barkley Sound one time when trolling fast for coho at about 22ft down and got a nice 26lb spring !

Cheers

out this morning for a late start, lines in the water by about 730. decided to run to sheringham... trolled for a couple hours and the odd fish was caught, then seemed to be a bit of a bite from 10-noon or so... saw more fish being played between the 6 boats that were there, and we finally managed a nice 24 pounder right in on the rocks. 59 feet on the rigger in 70 feet of water using the betsy and chrome green teaser head.

after a while longer, headed out about a mile and started trolling back towards the harbour... got into a load of pinks and coho. first 2 to the boat were some very nice hatchery coho about 6 pounds.

got our boat full of 12 fish shortly after and called it a day. not too shabby at all!

saw one boat fishing next to us with two older fellas in it, they had a nice showing of 4 springs within a couple hours... 2 of them looked closer to 30!

Fished Possession yesterday from 630am - 11am, foggy and crap every where, great combo, lol. Picked up a 14lber out in 150ft of water, 75ft on the rigger, betsey /bloody nose. Hit a double header off the tip of Secretary, lost one got one, 24lbs, purple hot spot/purple chrome, 70ft and 81ft. Caught our fish between 930am - 1030am.

Lots of pinks in 300 - 500ft of water. One in every 12 coho has been a hatch for us, quite a few wilds out there are missing half their face, has been non stop out there the last 5 days and the fish ae getting pounded. My last 4 trips have been very slow for springs almost sold my grar,LOL.Some guys are having some good days but overall I don't think its hot for springs, day to day. Back out Sat. with the old man for the SVI Rangers Derby. I hope he brings some of that old man luck, lol!

Out Monday and Tuesday at Sherringham. Monday fishing solo managed a 20, lost another mid twenties that was the second fish of a double header that spat the hook. Caught and released six others that were between 8 lbs to low teens. While I had the 20 on the dog decided to go overboard but I managed to get him back in by the tail before his hind legs hit the water. Pretty busy day. Tuesday lost another in the low twenties due to a foul up with the net. Caught and released one more around 9ish pounds and then at 11ish a 29.5 lbs (my buddy no longer has to swim home over the netting incident from earlier). One more for us that weighed 18.5 lbs. All fish were caught at 50 - 60 feet on betsy flashers and chrome/purple and nose bleed teasers.

Now that had me laughing, Steve. You must have been a tad busy! My dog did that once when I was trout fishing---launched himself out of my canoe after a whitetail that appeared on the lakeshore. The difference was he just about sent ME into the water! I was in the middle of a fly cast when 80 lbs of dog unexpectedly exited the boat. Damned knothead of a dog.:)

No Rigours

My dog bailed out of the boat on Constance while anchored up, he quickly learned that the current was rippin. he was attempting to swim back to the boat...but the distance kept getting larger.

I thought to myself...I GET A NEW DOG:D

but the tears rolling down Justin's (Tailspin) cheek made him release anchor then we gaffed him by the collar....I was gonna use the harpoon:)

he hasn't bailed out since

Looks like the tail of a coho, silver with no spots. Do you guys ever catch springs with no spots or Coho with a few spots?

WHAT??? look at the pic again.

And you will find your answer.

Im sorry but thats a really dumb question.

I don't think he's implying it IS a coho, just that you can't see any spots on the tail.

Oh and I used to take my dog out when I had the grady, she loved it and thought she went to heaven when a fish came aboard. I don't think I'll be taking her out in the 17'er though.

Sorry, i worded it wrong i guess, I was just implying that somtimes the tail is not the best way to tell them appart. I ofcourse being a avid fisherman for 12 years can tell my fish appart. But i was just wondering if anyone has caught one that they wernt sure of. I once caught one in port renfrew that i couldent tell what the hell it was. Turns out it was an atlantic salmon.

Out in the AM 18.5 brown double eagle. probably Trap or Secretary. If you see me Hollar.

It is a pretty pale looking spring eh? Fantastic fight to it though! It was actually a red, I kinda thought the same as you R.S.
T2, it's incredible you managed to stay afloat in the canoe with the dog jumping in. My dog's a springer so a little more manageable but can be a handful especially if I don't get the leash on him in time. He kind of sounds the siren ever time there's a fish on and whines until you get it in the cooler. Has this thing for licking the fish as well. I hear you on the wind Gypseas, I'm really hoping the wind lets up for next week as I've booked from Tuesday on off. Arghh, 7 days of fishing!! If all goes well with all his whining the dog should have quite a sore throat come the end of that stretch.:)

Hi all - Is there some sort of derby going on in Sooke this weekend? Want to get out there, but may skip if it's going to be a traffic jam. Thanks
