pardon my ignorance, but what are the regs on coho?

2 Coho ,Fin clipped only up to a total of 4 salmon a day
(all species combined)
it will change Oct 01/ 09 , i believe...

was out for approx 1 hour tonight with a buddy and his grandson, lucked out on coho...all hatchery tonight, with the exception of a couple, limited out with Coho up to 9lbs, then his grandson turned green...and that was the end of the trip...it was pretty snotty out there

both were extremely happy...grandsons first fish:)

no springs however

Yup Chris 73, - to bad it wasn’t Derby Day today. I am sure it would have been a real highlight, - me weighing in a 5 lb pink right after Addicted’s 33 and 36 lb springs. What a moment to treasure.

Holy coho Batman!! Fished the Head to the Trap this morning and could not believe the coho and small Springs. Good idea we left the bait at home and fished hardware. Bonked 6 hatco's and a 28.8# smiley. Have a big BBQ tonight so lookin' good.

It looked too windy so I didn't go out. Was it not as bad as it looked this morning? - I checked BigWave Dave at 230 and it said 20 and 30 knots everywhere. I'm in a 14.5' boat so its gotta be pretty nice - maybe tomorrow.

today was the first day I saw whitecaps in Pedder Bay.Made it hard to see all the crab floats.
5:30 til 1pm today-not a sniff.Gave it a shot trying to head thru Race, but the wind had other ideas. The creel surveyor said nobody had brought in salmon except for those who braved it offshore.
Oh well, better than mowing the lawn

Juandeone, way to go. I was going to head out with my wife this morning. I cancelled first thing. She is a fairweather for sure so it was best I listened to my instincts. Looks like it could have been a blast out there otherwise. Makes a guy feel invigorated for sure with a sunnny wavey day like that.

3 springs at the Trap this morning and lost another and as always the biggest one too. It got ugly just before noon and the whales were on their way down from Sheringham so it was time leave. A few doggies in there today too, which wasn't welcomed on a rough day when there is already enough to do to keep the gear fishing properly.

So, who was fishing at Otter around 5:00pm in 30knot winds?
Looked pretty rough out there off the beach.

What won't they do for a piece of tail ;)

JUST FISHEN'

Got out with Chris73 this morning for the few available hours we had - nothing but a doggie show at Trap which was a bummer, moved over to Secretary, nothing but a coho show there - couldn't complain - had one take it on the surface just before I was about to lower, another before I could even stack - think we had about 10 in the hour or so we had there, switched over to coyotes and hootchie once we ran out of bait and it was pretty much non stop - 50-80' the norm - all wilds but 2 - the hatch were about 6 lbs...no springs - heard of one big one in low 30's on the radio at sheringham, saw a teener back at the launch. Coho's and pinks seem to be flavor of the day.

Side note for those in the Consultant's Derby, we have a trip for 2 donated by Duncanby Lodge in River's Inlet - will be raffling off at the event - bring some cash with you as they want us to raise as much as we can for SSE in return!

We started at the trap as well. piles of dogs. We saw one about 20 caught and vividly saw another guy miss a solid hit. We also trolled up to sec and threw down a couple hootchies. coho were very very thick. It was just my mom and i in a very small boat and manual DR's. We had a blast, solid action until we got our 4 hatches. Then went back to the trap and trolled back to cheanuh. Suprisingly we hooked a spring just past beechy but we lost it. 77' on a whitish hootchie. o well can't complain! I had a great time out there with my mom, whom I seldom get to fish with these days!

Also I think its important to to mention that people should handle the wild coho as delicately as possible. DO NOT net them and DO NOT bring them in the boat. Keep trolling and get them near the boat then grab the line and pull the fish up alongside the boat. Take a look and if its wild, just reach down and grab the hook and flip it off. They will be far far less tangled if you use singles - trebles allow the line to get wrapped around them and back in the hooks easier. Its also sketchy grabbing a treble to flip it off.

I think there are many of ways to properly release coho but this technique works well and you don't even have to touch the fish. Lots of people were dumping coho over the side of the boat today and those fish are less likely to survive.

Anyways, maybe out again wednesday, I hope somebody on this forum found a spring.

once the cohos show up i start using alot of spoons, lowers the amount of doggies you catch aswell. And as capitan said you can grab the single hook and shake them off easy.

Hey wolf I sent you an email a while ago did you not get it?

I have summer classes so I had to stick around but I got some time in August once my exams are through, probably the 11th or 14th until sept 4th.

You must be missing not being up there. I don't mean to rub it in but it has been a decent season so far - I get to hear all about it via my girlfriend. Hopefully it continues that way.

THANK YOU to the two elderly gents in the white boat at the Trap at 10:30 am.today who drove over my line. I was yelling "FISH ON" YOU"RE CROSSING MY LINE" , but instead they waved gaily back :"hello, hello" and kept going right across my line. You not only drove over and cut off and lost my fish and tackle but I had a double and the other rod jumped out of the holder and was lost in the drink. **** ME OFF !
