Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Rockfish...expect some kind of opening maybe by late July...early August should almost be a sure thing. The duration of the opening is anyones guess. This is the dominant year and I think we could get a couple weeks or longer.

Coho everywhere this morning. Went through a pack of bait in no time then turned to gear. Water melon spoon is a coho killer. Caught some decent size coho with a few hatchery.

Back at it tomorrow.

Tips

Yup, coho-mania today. Due to wind and a lot of boats at the trap ended up accidentally at the first tideline and it was crazy! In about an hour we must have had 20 fish - mostly cohos, one sockeye and a few smaller springs - all depths 50 - 100'. White hootchie was our killer after we ran out of bait. Some nice ho's but the good ones were always wild. Kept a ~7# hatch ho. Rest went back. Was a blast for the kids and mother in-law! No pinks. Saw one 33# spring caught at the trap. Otherwise not seen any decent springs. Wow, am I tired now!

picked up a 24# this morn at the shack. added 3 hatchery coho. lots of wild coho. was nice on the water once the fog lifted!

was at the east side of otter pt spin casting with kids.....lost one spring while landing it probably 19-20# and missed a couple others...but saw probably over 20 springs, yes chinook, not coho hit the surface all within casting distance...some big fish coming out of the water right in front of us...really cool to see.....thick with bait fish all sizes of schools....talked to guy that said it's been like that for a while now and hasn't been skunked in a 5 trips casting off the rocks....so much for deep?

siwash

We were out yesterday Sheringham and Muir, one spring teener 75ft on the rigger, lots of coho, and a few sockeye's:(. Bro and Dad were out today Otter 28, 22, and lost a mid twenties at the boat. Bloody nose.

Want to hit Otter tomorrow afternoon, but the forecast is against me. Seems like every time a good report coincides with some free time the wind blows. Grumpy for another week I guess. Good on you guys just the same. :D

That wind isn't looking good today. Maybe casting off the rocks like siwash would be the ticket. I know my Bro and Dad were getting them in tight like siwash said.

The whales have been around the last few days and are likely a reason for the fish being driven up against the rocks/shore in numbers. Will have to try a shallow tack on the next trip and check it out. Took a 22 and 3 hatchery coho this morning, windy and rough not much fun today.

I was wondering if the scale at Sunny Shores is accurate ? I weighed a good sized fish recently and was wondering if I was getting the right read on the scale. Comments ?

Thanks

did the scale give you a number less than you thought? :D

most of those triple beam scales are to wheathered to be accurate. I believe the only way to go is digital, but remember change batteries often. p.s that scale is S***:D

bang on we weigh the juad de fuca fish on it and it was 34 and a bit went and did the digital thing and it was 34.3 lbs and it was bang on today so yes I would say it works.

Everyone thinks they catch a 30 lber!!!!

Good luck Wolf

:D :D

Two of the most humbling things known to the outdoorsmen,, A scale to a fishermen and a measuring tape to a Whitetail hunter,, lolo very humbling indeed.
