Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Some weeds, lots of fog and 2 low teeners off the trap @ 70' right at the 7:30 tide change. Saw a couple of high twenties netted.

Double header for a 16 and 26 at Sheringham this morning. Missed the real early bite, which I know a few fish were taken.

Finally some action. First real time out on the water for weeks waiting for the wind to go away and not have to work.

Landed an 11 and a smaller one near Muir Creek. Beautiful day no weeds really to speak of. [8D]

at otter from 530 - 11. saw one landed at 615, then got a 21 at 930. other than that, didn't see or hear of another fish. maybe again tomorrow..

Took 3 on the first shift this morning, 30, 25 and 8 pounds. A few dogs and lots of small feeders, weeds were a pain for the first 3 hrs. Fog made it hard to tell what was being caught around us and to pick your way through the junk in the water 2nd shift we got a 20 and a 14 and the first pink of the season. Also the 2nd ever Steelhead (4-5 pounds)I've hooked in the salt in Sooke.

Interesting how that happens.... not too many steelhead taken in the salt that is. Took one around 9 lbs up at Naden Harbour in the Queen Charlottes. They stand out like a sore thumb. Unmistakable

That was the only one I have ever touched in salt in a lifetime of fishing.

Wow. You are the first one I know to have caught a steelie in the chuck. Hope it wasn't hooked too deep.
Have a picture of one off Parker pt in the Cahrlottes, funny thing is that myself and fellow form member "yo Mamma" looked at that pic. tonight after a few pops. That ocean caught steelie was actually part of a double header with a 22lb spring, both caught on cut plug hearing. Very rare, very lucky.

Out yesterday 4:45am to 12:45pm. Tons of small fish and dogfish at Otter point. Has one good hit but missed it. Then between Gordon Beach and Muir had a huge hit. It peeled line, right out of the downrigger, crazy. Awesome fight. 22lbs, 55 ft, Besty Flasher, green and yellow head. 8:30am, just at the end of ebb, beginning of flood. Really foggy.

Went to sherringham this morning - started a little later, about 730. Got one rod in the water and banged a 24. but that was it, didn't see another caught and nobody I talked to had any. we had to leave at about 11 and had a decent hit right before we pulled, and as we were leaving one guy was playing one. anyways, probly not out for a week or two now, hopefully things pick up by then.

Bird rock two. Very pretty fish. Glad to see it survived after ghacking back that cut plug. Wasn't easy. Took more than a few minutes to recharge.

I am surprised we don't hook more. Mind you, being a rainbow they are shy of the big flash we use for attracting springs.

We hit three in the mid teens today from the trap to Obrian, all were 90-135 on the riggs if you can believe it. Lots of feed around and fish down deep, not many fish caught though, heard talk of a 30ish on the vhf off the Head. Choves and herring in Bloody Nose and Chartruese heads, variety of flashers. Caught a few extra purple haze flashers on my rigger lines to[xx(] Way to tight out there today, guys tacking all over, dodging debris???

Fished Otter to past Sherringham today. Not a single salmon but managed to pick up 2 halibut while trolling, a 12 & a 38 off Muir that took 45 minutes to bring in on the downrigger rod. The hot lure was a purple/chrome anchovie special. Amazing never broke the leader, even after it dragged us a mile through all the crab traps.

Just got home from the trailer and can report that 5 fish over 30 lbs came in to the Otter Point Park the largest was 38 ( 3 over 30 including the 38 yesterday)
Got a 31 off of the Point early Sunday morning , 65 ft Green Hot Spot flasher , JDF Army truck sparkle head , 70in leader.
Lost two others to stupidity on my part , won't elaborate right now !

Fished Beechy Head down to Secretary for the morning. Hooked up about 8 small springs which we returned. Hooked up a 17 lb spring later in the morning, and an older shimano tdr rod I was using exploded when I set the hook, and broke in three places, unbelievably I was able to hand balm the fish in and save the fish and gear. Much like a lot of the other posts of late, all of my fish were hooked at around 125 ft. Lots of bait down deep it seems. I have a picture at the cleaning table at beecher bay with the fish a my 4 piece rod. I'll try to post them later.:D

Hit a couple off possession today, a small teen at about 1030 95 ft and another about noon also 95 ft. Both on green flasher and purple/chrome teaser. The window fisher strikes again!

fished otter this morning lots of small fish and had one spring on left went to possesion picked up a 37 first pass then done for the day

Yesterday we tried a couple of 5:30 am tacks at Secretary -looked dead. Moved to Noname, same same although we did see one fish get caught there. We moved west to Muir where there were a few shakers, saw one caught but that was it. It seemed slow with the very odd fish being caught.
