Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Fished Sooke yesterday. 7-11:30
Kept a 10lb for the BBQ. Lots of shakers, couple of pinks and that was about it. Never saw a net out.
Take lots of bait, I went through 2 packs with the shakers. (good thing I wasn't using trailer hooks ;))

Hope these big tides bring in new fish.

Tips

Tips Up.... I was thinking about going out to sooke tonight but doubt I will go. It has been slow for lots of guys, I know some guys seem to catch more then others but I'm not one of them...lol. And last night was a full moon so I'm thinking it might be a bit slow out there.

I hate asking questions.... but every little bit helps.....
How deep were you fishing? cause the latest talk has been that they are quite deep this year
Did you catch the pinks in close to shore or did you go out to one of the tide lines?
I've been watching the threads and it seems the best flashers to use would be either a purple haze or a green flasher with a green head. ( I remember a few years back lots of guys would run a gold flasher and that seemed to work back then but haven't heard much about gold this year). Were you running green on green? or purple haze? or ???
I have also been reading that some guys don't want to tell you thier secrets but isn't that the reason we all talk to each other. Thanks for any info you can give me..... Steve.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

Sea Ranger,

The Betsy is gold backed... well it comes chrome backed too but most guys go with gold-backed so every time you see betsy, think gold. I've been out to sooke three times recently and each time we got 1 spring and they were all on the betsy. 50', 66', and 47'. I'm sure other gear is working but this seems fairly consistent for me and other have said its working for them too.

I shot you an e-mail.
Go fishing tonight. A nice night on the water is better than a night at home wishing you were on the water. I may go tomorrow night.
Even though it is slow there is a big fish reported every day! This could be you!

Good luck

Slow for us to say the least today... First light til noon at Secretary and Possession. One bout 7lbs (80ft) let go and that was it. Not even a pink! Heard of a couple caught on the radio but didn't see a net all day! Hope people had better luck than us, and I hope my luck hasn't run out finally! Maybe I shoulda headed west!?

1st time out fishing in my new boat - . Slow day....2 very small springs, undersized and released, 12.30 just as we were getting ready to pack it in....had a good bite but lots it , line broke at the flasher, 70 ft at the shack with bloody nose. CHOKED to say the least!! .....what test are you guys using for the leader? Saw a few nice ones back at Cheanu.

Well I had kids on the boat today so went for a rub at possesion and sec. saw one small fish caught looked to be about a 8 lber so went looking for pinks out came the usual pink hoochies got some VERY nice sockeye (6)and coho (2) not one hatchery go figure when I go target the damn things get nothing but wild ALL went back very frustrating throwing back about a 10 to 12 lb sockeye and trying to explain to guests "THERE NOT OPEN" anybody know when or if they have heard of an opening??? btw not one damn pink got the sockeye at 90 ft on the rigger.

25 to 40lb test. I used 25 to 30lb test for my bait and spoon leaders for years with no problems, even with some heavy handed guest. After being sawed off a few times last year in sooke I bought some 40 this year but still find myself using 25 to 30lb. Seen many super newb u drives in the Charlottes land chinooks over 50lbs on 25 - 30lb leader too, I think it is persoanal preferance and what you are confident with. My Hootchies and squirts are always on 40lb test leader.

Out last night, got 3 pinks 2 7 pound hatchery hoes, and one 15 pound spring. all 70-90 ft on the rigger. Coyote spoons! got back to cheanuh and saw about 20 springs 4 over 30 at the cleaning table, apparently it went off between 5-7:30pm at the trapshack.

After reading one of Wolf’s recent reports I called DFO today to ask about any information on a possible Sockeye opening for Area 20. They seem to be aware that there are Sockeye out there and advised me to call back in about a week. There was some mention that they may be early Stuarts runs and if so they would likely want to protect them. I was also advised that the decision was not up to them but rather was up to the Pacific Salmon Commission. Still, the comment to call back in a week seems to offer a little hope for a sport opening.

ditto from what wolf said. Fished otter at day break. No springs. 2 coho, way out, but you have to throw 4 back for every legal keeper.
Nice day though.
The chatter on the radio was that there were fish to be caught if you stick it out

If it helps you, guts were full of 5"-6" bait and you could see 6"herring beside the boat.

Hope we can scare them up for Tuesday Wolf. I recommended you to a client and they're bringing me along as balast so I see you then.

Wow I agree with wolf here it is SLOW, but it will improve eventually. Hey Fly fishing guy what boat were you in? I was out there from 6:30 on , and if went off I apparently missed it. I saw one small yellow boat hit a fish in 2 1/2 hours. That is news to me...

It was a couple diff guys at the cleaning station who had the big springs, saying it was hot, but for me it was slow on the inside so i ended up in the tidelines, looking for a few pinks for hali bait. ended up with a few nice BBQ hoes, and a 14.5 pound spring to boot. not bad after all.

After reading here seems the inside only went off for those two boats.

hey guys im heading out tomarrow morning what time is first light. 430?

On the water at 6:00 with Striper Jack this morning. We dropped the gear before Aldridge, released a small spring and landed a feisty 18# in short order, looked very promising with miles of herring chasing crill from Fraser to the Head. Rounded the Head and it was dead...Got to Secretary and got into a mixed bag of wild and clipped scrappy Coho to 9#. Whale show then arrived in force, great show! A few decent Springs at the dock but pretty spotty overal.
