Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Betsy comes in a few colors now. I like the betsy gold. It is gold on 1 side and has a prism of I think gold/silver/green on the other.
There is also a betsy silver and a couple of new ones out.

The package has a warning right on the front that these flashers will lose paint right away and are non returnable. They look pretty beat up after a couple of trips but work like a charm.

Went for a late morning boat ride, was fishing at Otter by 1030am. Had a small one on off the point and lost it just as the whales came through. Red hot spot and peanut butter head, 70ft., that was just after 11am, shortly after that there were only 4 boats left. The water was a real washing machine mid to late morn. and there was a ton of junk in the water. Got frusterated and moved down to Possession, water was crap down there until 2pm, had to be home so only fished until 330pm, sure was setting up nice as the afternoon went on. Only saw one fish caught all day and that was a small coho off Secretary. Should have kept going west.....Also saw a Grey or Humpback scraping the rocks off Possession today which provided a postcard tail shot.

Fished otter 8 - 10 tonight hooked two, landed one about 14. Friend was also out and landed one about 26. Bait really started to show up as night went on. Looks to be a high tide show.

Fished Possession yesterday 7-10.At about 930 hooked a monster and after about10 minutes it took a run under a local guides boat and got caught on something. After checking one downrigger then both then the kicker it was finally determined to be wrapped around his inboard leg. After at least 5 minutes and some ..er tense moments they were able to get a hold of my line and somehow the fish was STILL ON.They pulled it in by hand and netted a 34 lber for me(thanx Rod):)
Not the best fight ever but could have turned out worse and pretty ironic how I was just reading about this kind of thing on here somewhere a couple of days ago.
Purple haze has been good for me latley.75 feet.

hey guys,

Probably the only guy without one but... is the betsy flasher the one with the straight silver flash on one side and the other side has a green fading to gold strip running along one of the lengths? and is there different colours?

Here's a couple different ones.

Yes, FishFlyGuy,there is two of you,I guess. My friend Neil has been FlyGuy for years.Uses only fly rods for salmon and is usually out at Renfrew cut plugging for the big ones.He does fish out of Esquimalt also.He even has a FlyGuy coat and hat!!But he is FlyGuy, not FishFlyGuy.Hillbilly, over and out!!

anyone hooking up with any pinks yet should only be a couple more weeks now.

Started late yesterday (7am) and missed the early bite, then the whales showed up and killed the mid-day bite....zippo in the boat. Today got out at 6am didn't hit anything early but after a couple hrs started hitting fish fairly steady (including a double) until we quit at 11:30. Ended up with a 23, 22, 21 and 18.5, lost 3 more. Awesome flat and clean water day, the easterly never blew today as it was forecast to do.

profisher are you east or west of sooke basin? Cudos to you for hitten them, but it would sure be nice to ballpark where your fishin.

I'll be out tomorrow for the weekend rush. Reports are so mixed I don't know what to expect. I'll post what happened tomorrow night.

About 95% of the time its W.

I was on the early shift at Possession/Secretary, 5:30-8:30. One good bump that got off the hook, right in tight to Secretary north-west corner, 50 feet. Saw another fish caught right then too, a teenager. Didn't see other nets out, but fishing was spread out.

Brought home one small one for the BBQ. I wondered about it at the time and pretty much confirmed on cooking...first pink of the year for me off Sooke.
