2025 OFFISHALL Vancouver- Howe Sound-Sechelt Fishing Reports Thread

Fished 7:30 to 10:30 this morning, through the slack low and first hour of flood. Let some wild coho and smaller chinooks go. Boxed this white after a solo adventure landing it.

Guy at the gas dock said 26lbs and he’s probably pretty close. At 55’ on the rigger in 300’ out deep.

Tried different tacks in tight and out deep and nothing felt too fishy. Expected to have more action as the flood started but it seemed pretty tame.

I'll just say what we lost right at the boat (after a fairly long fight with what we initially thought was a big spring) with me holding the gaff in my hand already could've been nominated as a real King of Starry flounders lol.

With so many boats out and not a single report of that kind of bycatch, this probably means nothing - just one of those random stories that people get them in this part of Georgia strait once in awhile...

The sablefish caught twice in a row here makes me wonder though...
They're pretty distinctive with alternating black and silver sections along the fins. Should be able to distinguish from a chicken halibut.

Indeed! I’m dead straight sure you had some memorable moments before she came aboard!!
Well done, Beautiful fish.

Amazing day at T 10. Great conditions, but the tide was ripping for sure. Once we figured that out, we dropped in and got mostly small fry just north of the bouy in shallower water. Then we headed south and got into deeper water. Fish everywhere on the sonar. We ran bait on one side and hoochie on the other side for the first half hour, but there was no competition. This was an all-bait show after that. Three unbelievable mid-teens Chinook (one marble, one deepest red I’ve seen, and a white) to round out the day. Once we got deeper, the big fish starred biting.

I'm glad to hear somebody had good results today.
We got out to Sandheads for the afternoon flood tide and all I can say is what a difference a week makes.
Last Wednesday we were on fire out there in the afternoon and today crickets. Lost two smaller fish possibly pinks or undersized and that was it. Ton of boats out there for a weekday and only saw a handful of marginal looking fish being caught... Nothing that looked like epic battles but there were a lot more boats out than what was around us so if others have different stories please let us know. We tried all different gear, all different depths, speeds, areas etc.
Had high hopes for the last calm day in a while but nada. Not sure if this is shaping up to be a much shorter season than last year but we were still having great success into October last year.
One guy coming at the dock around 11 said he had done well early in the morning so that might be the ticket.

Fished sandheads 7am-1pm today. Spent a good chunk of time trolling all over, alternating depths/speed/lure/flasher. Eventually found ourselves in one little area right at the mouth of the river that had a solid bite going for atleast an hour. One of those classic scenarios when everyone around was hooking up. We found army truck flasher with a coyote spoon in green to be most successful. Tight lines

I was at t-10 too. I lost one Spring early then it was ho’s all day. Non-stop. I’m not seeing the Spring action compared to previous years. Just one mans view. Now……this year I’m doing spoons exclusively for the first time. Maybe chovies would improve my Spring catch rate. Who knows. Not spending $15-20 a pack anymore tho. It’s outta control.

It has definitely slowed down. We fished the SH from 8-3:30 yesterday and only caught 2 mid teen chinooks in the morning one white and a marble. Lost a couple that fought like chinooks but we lost them halfway through the battle. Spoons did really good and the white hootchie was a coho favorite. Anchovy was getting a lot of pink hits in the morning and then nada after 11.
Not sure if the rain that we got on Sunday sent most fish up the river but I like to blame the low chinook numbers on the 2021 atmospheric river. Next year will be good again. 😉 At least that’s my form of consolation lol
Tight lines!

SAND HEADS SEPT 11TH...

My brother and I slept in a bit and decided to head to the ramp at noon since we were out late the night before. We met up with my river fishing buddy Mark and headed out. Apparently there was an amazing AM coho bite that died once we arrived.

We picked up a couple wild coho, double header pink... but it was over all slow like expected as the tide continued to fall. I believe around slack tide way out beyond pack down 100 feet on an anchovies we picked up Mark's biggest fish ever an 18lb chinook. He was just vibrating... was awesome to see.

It stayed very slow till 5 pm and everyone was so spread out. I looked towards the green can and it was vacant. So I headed straight in. Got into 160 feet and we had two releases... landed one chinook and lost the other. Dropped the lines and instantly got another. We turned and all of a sudden it felt like 30 boats were headed right at us.

We had changed back to Hootchies and spoons and the bait was getting mauled by pinks and sockeye. The chinook seemed to enjoy the hardware. Running one rigger at 83 and one at 75 the action was consistent with several double headers. The current was strong and we had a few screamer long line releases.

Then we had a take down trolling against the current with lines straight out behind us at sharp angle that just popped and ran at high speed. Bro pick it up and was just hanging on... and then nothing. Reeled It in and the leader had snapped close to the Flasher. So I figure it had a nick from the Flasher snap unfortunately.

Got the lines reset with a different spoon and kept trolling north away from green bell against the current. Line pops and screaming like no tomorrow. Bro say better bring in the other line. I go to the other side. Pop the rod off the rigger and start reeling up the line when all of a sudden the rod doubles over and now I'm hooked up. Lines peeling out. Both fish behind boat crossing sides. I know my brother has the fish we can't lose so I pul mine in ASAP and Mark put a beauty net job on it lifting a our biggest of the day in at 20 pounds.

My brothers fight continued for about 15 minutes... and as the fish came close we could see the head was a different caliber. Took our time. We weren't going to rush anything. But as my brother slowly coaxed her to the boat she rolled, so I did a full extended reach over the back with the net and made the desperation scoop. Fish in the net! 29 pounds on the deck. So close.

Still looking for the Tyee.
If you read the story earlier... here's the little cell phone video. Got to love heavy fish, haha.

I as well. Arrived a little later about 11 but was non stop cohoes until about 3 then it died. No springs but weeded through about a dozen cohoes to get my limit of hatcheries. Bait was on fire so naturally i changed up to lures. White hootchies were then the ticket - couldn't buy anything on spoons. Great day for water/weather conditions. Might be the last spectacular day of summer but still tons of season left.

Come and buy a bag of herring at the sale in January.

After a slow start to the morning yesterday I made the crossing to Sandheads solo and had my one line in the water right at noon and ground it out until 4:00. I had an early hit then caught one hatch coho about a half hour in then nothing for hours. I started out with the herring that was hot last Thursday but it wasn’t getting any love so I tried the Tomic 602 for a while before gradually going through my three other favourite flasher/lure combos varying depth, speed and fow to no avail. My recently hot spoon got the only spring hit that I had on just long enough to feel it spit the hook. The white ‘Oilslick’ hoochie got one nice wild coho which I gaff released at the side of the boat.
I was tempted to join the pack off of the green can but there was a bit of traffic in the shipping lane so I didn’t tempt the chaos running alone.
If this is it for 2025 at Sandheads I’m glad I finally got to experience it after a few years of drooling over the fishing reports.

How much did you spend on gas this year getting there!

One for the local's ,???? why do the crabbers put in traps in one of the areas where there our 200 boats going all ways, on a daily basis people get snagged up on them surely they know the opening is sep1st and its a gong show for a month and a half ... or do they not give a toss .......

Lots lol but everywhere I can find fish is a run from the marina. If I only consider the difference between running to Porlier and on to Sandheads it’s less than $100 per trip for the extra half hour each way. If I compare it to running to Entrance the difference is much less at about $30 per trip. From my slip Flat Tops/Thrasher is 17 miles, Entrance is 22 miles, Porlier is 13 miles, and Sandheads is 27 miles.

Three of my four trips across this year were worth it. 😁

So was that you that I yelled at on Monday morning? I think I saw you a couple times in the past week.
