2025 OFFISHALL Vancouver- Howe Sound-Sechelt Fishing Reports Thread

I have reeled in nothing but a swivel and 5’ of leader a few times this year fishing teaser heads including the other day at Sandheads. I did catch two dogfish at Sandheads so I figured that could have been the culprit although I have found fraying above the teaser head after landing a mature spring as well. I’ll take the three springs to two dogfish ratio any day though and I just keep a good variety of tied teaser rigs handy. After continuously learning the same lesson I now keep a baited teaser rig ready and swap the whole thing out after each fish. It doesn’t take me any longer than plugging a new anchovy or herring in and I check the one I took off before re-baiting it once that rod is fishing again.

I get anxiety if we don't have two replacement rigs baited and ready to go lol. That bite doesn't last long sometimes!

Seals are a possible culprit too. One stripped all meat off a small coho leaving the head, skeleton and tail. Then surfaced behind the boat. What was left onto the the hook looked like something from a cartoon. Don’t recall if we laughed. Did get sealed at Sandheads a few weeks ago while searching for clipped cohos.

Our stingers get sheared off often when netting bigger fish. Especially when using a treble in the bait. Combination of the chinook teeth and the treble getting caught up in the net. Hang 20 twisting pounds off of that and it's very likely. A lot of times if it doesn't come off right there, it'll come off on the next hit. We're constantly tying new bait rigs this time of year.

I never break off anywhere else though, yall need to figure that ish out 😉
trailers are always an issue in the net even with 40 lb fluoro. this time of year i switch to mostly gaff shots, back in the water allot quicker with these snappy bite windows.

Probably a good idea, especially when they're swallowing them anyway.

We went out late afternoon to SH yesterday, crowd seem to have thinned out. Shook off a few pinks, then hit a nice red spring as I was setting the gear, hit my beloved cut plug herring, thought I had my drag set too tight because the rod shot up only 25 feet down setting, started reeling in the slack thinking I had to reset not paying attention and it knuckle busted me. Ha, lol, loved it more than banging it with a hammer.. like others had several more hits popped clip did not stick all on cut plug kept getting pinks on the Chovy and hoochie, then boxed another red spring when we turned to head in on the cut plug. Shallow for us yesterday, I think the overcast weather made a difference. Both landed Springs at 60 feet.

We lose the trailer hook in the net quite often, yesterday lost two out of the fish we had (8 springs, 2 coho plus ~1/2 dozen pinks). But can't remember the last time we had a fish break off before we get to the boat. This is running 30 lb fluoro leader (Seaguar Blue or Gold), egg loop on bait end and San Diego Jam at the swivel end. The leader get a quick check after every fish and if there are any nicks a new one goes one.

I would never use a pre-tied leader bought from a store or given to me by someone I didn't trust.

Not at SH but at Entrance last weekend we had two herring teaser rigs in a row get sheered right at the teaser head in very close succession (couple minutes). Never saw what hit them, but both lines came up with no hooks, no herring, just empty heads.
I had the same thing happen to me there 2 years ago, so strange.

Fished 110 for and south this am- seemed like quite a few coho around- some big unclipped coho release at side of boat- picked up - hatch and a couple pinks- no nookie for us there today.. was slowish and choppy- moved to bell and was soe for a bit then a but of a flurry- hooked up a hog- cannot believe but lost another big nook- 2nd time trailer hook bent- garbage hooks-
Released another big unclipped hole at side of boat, as well as an undersize spring landed a nice hatch coho, as well as another pin popper that didn’t stick then moved to West Van pink apartment to cap kind of thing as it was
a little flatter and more relaxed in there and again lost a decent Nookie on surface.
Batting average, definitely needs to improve, but all in all it was another great day out there on the briny.

Well was a slow 10:30am start for us today at Sandheads with us losing our first couple of fish. Around 2:00 p.m. things took a turn for the better and we had constant action for a couple of hours. Managed to finally land a couple of springs and lost a couple ...one was on a double header. Also lost a nice looking coho.
Lots of pinks to the boat late in the day.
Catching everything on chovie and cop cars.
Springs were in 70 to 90 range.
Was pretty lumpy for our 19 foot Campion and stacking downriggers was probably a mistake in the wind and waves....not worth the hassle. Save it for a flat day.
Not near the size springs we were getting last year but as my wife said we took our daughter out on October 5th last year for her birthday and we had an amazing day fighting numerous big springs so there can be plenty to come! Just scroll the archives for last year I was over fishing the Somass towards mid October and still reading reports of good fishing at Sandheads.
Looks flat tomorrow afternoon but the NW winds are back for the week.

I'm going to give it a crack tomorrow. We're going to fire up the bbq and lower the expectations. Tides aren't great.
