The OFFISHAL Vancouver 2011 Reports Thread

Packed up the boat last Sun after going 0-0 in the AM. Spent the Afternoon washing it up/cleaning out for Winter storage. Won't go back out unless its a seatrial for sale - looking to get a bigger boat for next season, maybe a 28'.

But I'm still available on Weekends to go fishing on Your Boat!

Boating Adventures fishing locally this year included:
-->Main & kicker going out 6:30pm on Fireworks night. (Electrical). Got the kicker going by isolating it away from the main. (The wiring in the Switch had corroded) And finally making it back to Vanier through the fleet on my kicker at 9:15pm in the dark. That sucked, but made it home.

-->Getting a line wrapped on the main, using the kicker back to the jericho Emergency dock to make sure the line wasn't inside/going to cause any damage. That was middle of the afternoon, so it was a lot easier. The wrap wasn't deep, and was easy to remove, so we were back at it 20 minutes later.

-->Hooking a 30' log on my downrigger cable while fishing out off the north arm. While removing it drifted into a crab trap line.

-->Only 2 battles with Crab Traps this year. Won one and Lost one.

Local Highligh of the Season:
Salmon fishing alone with my 6 Y.O. son in the Harbour .a few hours on flat water in the beautiful sun @ 27 degrees or so. Filling our limit. Him netting my fish and reeling in his own. Him learning to start the boat, drive, tilt the motors, etc. Arms are a little short to work the downriggers yet. Maybe next year.

That alone makes all the other BS seem trivial. There's nothing more important than taking your kids out fishing with you. Glad to hear that another kid has joined the fishing fraternity. Keeping them involved in good healthy outdoors activities hopefully keeps them out of the nasty city pitfalls such as gangs and drugs.

Glad to hear you and the son are enjoying some quality time on the water together.

Awesome report ... that reels to some sediments in another thread. :D

WELL BOYS....anyone fish the CAP today????????Thinking of running over from Nanaimo for something to do tomorrow and fish with a buddy or 2 If they can play hooky, and might sleep onboard to make an overnighter of it.GOT to have a couple cold-ones!! Maybe that bit of rain put them off the bite?????? Or some fresh ones moved in??????

I spoke to a guide friend and he said rain drove some fish up the river. Was hot on Friday but slower this weekend. I am out tomorrow. Will post a report.

That Cap mouth fishery changes real fast with the rain[fished there for maybe 20 years]...Will be nice to be on the old Stompin Grounds...

friday was awesome for us, saturday a bit slower and today very slow. Smoking all these springs and hatch coho as the freezer is full of sockeye, lings and halibut! Back out tomorrow, hopefully its better. Gonna focus on getting the boat rigged up and dialed in for shellfish(spot prawns, shrimp and crab). Been a fun season boys!

Went out yesterday afternoon was slower for us no springs nut managed a double header of coho which caused a little chaos for us lol

Was out at the Cap for 3 hours both Saturday and Sunday a.m. and made very last minute decisions each day, given the weather, and went out by myself ... made fishing in the crowds, with not everyone following the lanes, a little more interesting. On Saturday, lost a really nice spring to a seal first thing Saturday that was followed by a 15 lb marble spring that was kept and 3 dark jack springs that were released; and, on Sunday, I kept an 18 lb marble and one bright, chrome hatchery coho. Bottom bounced both days and burned thru anchovies and valuable fishing time with a number of little flounders. I was curious about the dark jack springs as I havn't hit that many, that I can recall, in recent Septembers at the Cap. Here's hoping the fish stack up again for those who can get out during the week.

Sunday Cap Fishing

Start by sayin what a SH*TSHOW!! This was my first time fishing the cap, altho I had heard a lot of stories. Is it so hard to troll outside while heading east and then inside when heading west (right hand rule) Boats are cruising in every direction wherever they want. I ended up almost getting hit by a boat who's driver watching his phone more than where he was going, he then hooked my lines and stole my gear on 2 rods. Worst part of all it was a guided boat!! It seems some of the guides think they have the right of way regardless of all the other boats out there.
Now I've finished my rant.....
The fishing was phenomenal!! I saw LOTS of fish landed and LOTS of fish lost. I also managed to keep 2 and lose 2. 1 was a super bright chrome beauty and the other was definitely starting to turn and was a little darker. There were BIG coho jumping everywhere, but I couldn't get em to hit. I tried moving my gear up higher, between 20 to 40 feet with a chovy, but no luck. Any suggestions for targeting the big ho's?

Try cut plugging, Coho get a little gear shy once it gets later and they've been hanging out at the river mouth for a while. Single herring in a teaser or cutplug often works a little later in the season when Salmon sometimes don't like the flashers as much.

slow today, lost one and landed one 18lb white. wildwest I saw you working the area as well, Im on the 18' whaler with hardtop and yankee flag on the bow. Gonna try losing the flashers next time Im out, once these fished get trolled over for a few weeks I think they get a little pickier. T10 for me tomorrow however.

If you have a red coloured teaser head they'll go for those once in a while late in the season.
