The OFFISHAL Vancouver 2011 Reports Thread

If you have a red coloured teaser head they'll go for those once in a while late in the season.

I agree, I used to put red mylar on my strip teaser heads in the old days for fall coho. No flasher 4-6 oz slip weight used to work great. Every once in a while that rig would catch a nice spring up top too.

Tried the cap for a few hours this afternoon/evening for my last trip of the season. No more slip, the boat is back up in my yard now.

Tons of coho jumping and finning, mostly 5lb or so but a few big ones. I ran a bait line bouncing bottom and a green coyote spoon at 47'. Hit two cohos on the spoon but they were wild and let them go at the boat.

What a great season for me. Freezer is full of sox, pinks and spring. Would've been nice to top it off with a big hog but I'm not complaining.

Cheers, see you next spring.

Any recent reports from T10? thinking of heading there today rather than playing with the dark springs at the cap..

Started around 10 AM yesterday morning. A guide friends had hooked 5 Springs at that point. We had a two hits before we got all lines in the water that didn't stick. It then cooled off, so we were a bit late. We had a jack, lost a Coho and couple other hits that didn't stick in the morning. Went out to the South Arm in afternoon, but it was quiet. Trolled from T10 to Iona. Had a couple of shakers and saw few socks jumping, but that was it. Everyone that I talked to seemed to have had a slow afternoon after the morning flurry.

... made fishing in the crowds, with not everyone following the lanes, a little more interesting. .

Start by sayin what a SH*TSHOW!! This was my first time fishing the cap, altho I had heard a lot of stories. Is it so hard to troll outside while heading east and then inside when heading west (right hand rule) Boats are cruising in every direction wherever they want. ?

Gotta agree with you guys about the "show". We were out on Saturday and there were some privately owned boats all over the map with lines out WAY behind their boat with no downriggers. Add to that the boatrent.ca and Sewell's rental boats that were running north south through the fleet again with NO riggers (even though they had them on the boat) that had me shaking my head. You would think the rental places would also give these people a quick "how to" of the way to fish that area.

I had to chuckle at a number of things out there on Saturday. First was the guy in the $19.00 Canadian Tire one man rubber dingy who was casting with the guys in the belly boats inside the channel marker. We named him "Canadian Tire" and despite the massive amount of money invested in boats that were out there fishing....he quietly rowed out in his orange/yellow dingy....started casting and we watched him bonk his 4 coho (I am hoping he was first nations as the limit is 2!) and went home.

The "boatrent" boat that was a guy and his girlfriend on the boat; it had rod holders and riggers but the "guy" who was driving wouldn't let his girlfriend put the rod in the rod holder. She sat there holding the rod for a few hours as they trolled around and we saw him telling her to keep holding it when she tried to put it in the holder at one point.

I can't believe the number of boats that are using weighted lines that are fishing tight in the pack by the mouth....a bit of a gongshow and I know of 3 other friends who were out fishing all who lost gear because of these guys. We did have one rod out at the surface but it was quite literally right in our prop wash (and hooked up!!) and would never get anyone else caught up.

The guys in the big 30-33ish foot boat (SeaRayish looking) who were originally anchored inside the channel marker and casting who for some reason moved out so they were about 30 yards off the marker right where people were having to troll by on their "inside" tack. I think they very quickly got an earful as they moved back inside the marker after only being out there for a few minutes.

The Sewell's boat trolling north/south through the pack right at the mouth was a thing of beauty....lines WAY out behind the boat despite having riggers on board. 4 people in the boat completely oblivious as to why people were yelling at them and trying to figure out how it couldn't have been somewhat obvious as to the etiquette of the VERY, VERY crowded space. We eventually kept our tacks off the to west and turning to head back out west near the Ambleside pier as the "show" to the west of the pier was comical at times.

I really hope people learn to steer clear of the shipping lanes as there were about 4-5 freighters that rolled through and some of the fishing boats were NOT clearing the lane despite getting 5 blasts from the freighter's horn. I was amazed how close some boats were to the freighters as they were headed in/out and it was absolutely NO surprise to me that the Harbour Patrol came out to control and "herd" people out of the way. Guaranteed the crowd of boats was reported to the patrol and that is why the came out after the first 4 freighters had gone through; with "shows" like this, don't be surprised if this fishery right in tight there gets closed down sometime in the future. There was one smaller sort of bowrider looking boat (brownish/tan) that kept wandering out into the shipping lane despite the patrol trying to herd him back....AND with a freighter bearing down on him pretty darn close WITH their horn blasting. We were shaking our heads wondering what this idiot was thinking.

The joys of the Cap September fishery out on the chuck...it's a beautiful and tranquil time. :p

Pips you forgot to mention the American guys in the whaler who came up dangerously close to your starboard at full bore, hoisting a 23lb white whilst all wearing oakley ski goggles....

Ya....they weren't playing Bruce Springsteen tunes so I questioned the authenticity.

I didn't make it out on the weekend, so nothing personally to report. I did stop by the ramp today late aft on the way home. Talked to two different boats, both caught nada. One was fishing the Cap, the other was off Pt. Grey.

Very amusing post Pippen. Conjures up the scene exactly as I remember seeing it when driving across the Lions Gate bridge 20 years back. 8-)

So cap fishing gonna slow down after all the rain this week?

"Slow down AFTER the rain" , tell you what it has STOPPED before the rain. I was out fishing the Cap (lots of boats no nets outs so I moved) and then moved to Point Atkinson area around the tankers and then moved again to the QA and Nadda.
I talked to a buddy who was fishing with another buddy (who usually is in the fish) and no springs just one pink and one wild Coho (both released).
I am hopping that the rain drives another bus load of springs into the harbour so we can all get a 30 lber. GL all

We tried T10 at the start of the flood yesterday morning, marking some nice bait schools right inside the marker. All we had was a double header of grilse. Headed in to the cap and had nothing at all. Hopefully some more fishs how up soon, sure starting to feel like fall. Will be back out tomorrow.

Fished the Cap yesterday on the flood with a friend.....very little action......released a humpy.
My fishing partner had some biz to attend to so I found myself solo and it was such a nice afternoon I motored out to the Bell .( not interested to fish the Cap with all that traffic when solo)
Boxed a a nice hatch coho doe.
Both fish on a green Ace High Fly

Any one out in the Cap gong show today with the Van. Firefighters derby on ?? Any fish at all ?

Was there a boat full of FF Chicks again ?? hahahah A couple of them gals can fish ........

heading out to the cap in a bit. Gonna be a wet one. Will report back after.

Maybe the rain will bring you in a new crop of smileys :) Good luck and go getem !

Wish I was heading out but I have to put a new alum fuel tank in the striper so off to work , but next week I wil be out again I hope !

Heard of 8 Springs weighed in and the biggest about 18 pounds. Not a great showing for the amount of boats and time spent. Gotta wait for the next wave to come in. Bell Buoy anyone ??

Big Hog ! long time, no post !

Yeah I heard that too , although biggest I heard was even smaller @ only 17 lbs ( close enough ). That is really too bad as this fishery will bring 8 chinook into one boat with several in twenties and maybe thirties, much less only 8 up to 18 lbs for the whole fleet ! .
It is slow right now but I highly doubt that is it. Despite the fact the dam has not opened up yet ( releasing tons of water down the cap- usually late Oct or later as I recall) the chinook can shoot up the river in heavy rains like we are having but as others have pointed out , it will likely 'bring in' any new waves of fish. Looking back at my logs, this fishery usually peaks the first week of October and is still good into the second week of October and in some years to the end of October. I see in the log that one year, Halloween turned out some very nice fish. My optimism is backed by other notes in my log so hold -on just yet as it is likely .....and of course hopeful....that we are far from over out there. ...... its gotta stop raining though as the 'waves' do need to arrive at a low river otherwise they will swim right past your bait with a determined agenda !!
