wow wolf sounds like you are fished out man!!

On a positive note, a fair amount of nice beefy 8-12lb coho out in the tidelines and about 50/50 hatch to wild also. A few feeders mixed in there also, no sign of springs at the cheanuh dock.

i see a fair amount of hostility on these pages these days, haha.

secrets to success and to chill out:
1) have a lucky lager
2) get laid
3) once one and 2 are completed : the fish will then bite, thus everyone will chill out!

Good words to live by, or get some cheese for all the wine that shows up around here from time to time.

...and I thought it's been a blast out there this year. Tough at times , yes. Most of the time actually, but also some days that have riveled any of the great days I have ever had.

Guess it depends on the expectations. It's all very subjective.

I can see where wolfs frustration comes from for him. My year hasn't been great in terms of numbers, but I also haven't got out any where near as much as last year. I have never had the hogs on my rod as I have this year though (3 around 30+ in I think 6 trips), so I consider it a success. For wolf, I seem to recall he took most of the early summer off when things were crazy for many. He likely relied on the typical crazy hog season from mid-aug to mid-sept. All you have to do, is look at his catch photos from 2007 and 2008 and compare to this year. The big boys are way down and I'm sure he isn't doing anything different. As a business, that would frustrate the hell out of me too. Hard to get repeat business when they come up empty handed.

Weird year regardless. From the reports, I assumed this was the best in 10-15 years...up until mid August. No idea why the run of big fish seems to have dried up. Is it good, or bad? Who knows, but they apparently aren't holding where they normally do, so something is messing up the cycle.

Anyhow, hate to see you pack it up wolf, but I'm sure you will still be here, even if its just for recreation.

Hey guys lets get some perspective here. Sure August was a bust for the most part and that is disappointing as expectation run high for 12 months waiting for it to come. But have we forgotten in only 2 months how much better the June run was this year over the past 6 or 7 Junes? Fish runs are cyclical, one year good another not so. You can break it down month to month or day to day....fishing is made up of good days and those not so good. I enjoyed June and my trip to Nootka in July, I'll forget all about the tough August/Sept days by mid October. I'll be looking forward to a new season in the spring while waxing and polishing the boat before it goes back in the water again.
The people I had out today were visiting from Spain. I tried for about 3 hours for a spring then gave up as they were getting bored. Took them out to the tide lines and got them into some coho. They kept 2 7-8 pound clipped fish and were thrilled with the prospect of fresh salmon for dinner. The small fish action was fun for them. Then the whales showed up and they got into that even thou they had done a whale watching trip a few days before. The water was flat, no one got sick and the sun was warm. It was a great day for them....that is all that counts!

Took my kids out for a fish again today , 2 pinks, 2/8#, 1/10#, 1/12# hatchery , and a bunch of wild and feeder springs . Another fun day for them .Wow was it a nice day on the water , didn't see the whales but we did see lots of Porpises skimming in Becher bay :D

Good perspective check Profisher. Hard not to get jaded, when you've seen it as good as it gets, everything pales from then on...."all timers disease".

But we live and fish in a beautiful part of the world. Catching a salmon is exciting and fun, even if just a small pink. Just being on the water is a treat, if you think of the typical day/month/year for most inlanders. How to see the world through the eyes of a first-timer again?

June was called best in recent memory, and July really good. Aug...not so much, but there's some nice fish still being caught here and there. Frankly, that seems to be the report every year...hot and cold, only a few people catching fish, but some big ones, etc.

Anyways...not much of a Sooke report. Hey, I hear there's limit catches out in the deep water! ;)

Good luck to all in the derby.

Hey Wolf no problem man-sounds like someone pissed in both our cornflakes this morning.Ill be a little more selective with my bites, snaps, and on fires lol.

I didnt think the first 2 weeks of August were all that bad.But ya the last couple of weeks have been rediculous-when it should be the best fishing of the year.I agree that June/July made up for it though.

I guess i should not have booked my "Big Spring Holiday" for the 1st - 10th of sept. I havent seen spring fishing this dead in Aug in awhile. Saw you out there wolf, never got close enough to introduce myself. but did try you on the radio. What do you answer to? Any luck today?

couple 10 pound hatchery coho's. Saw you out there frayedknot. Good to see you had the kids out!!

We were out last night to the 600 ft level and back trying for coho--nada but shakers. This was after the high slack so I guess the key is to fish the flood. Damn work gets in the way of good fishing....

Wolf, if I can suggest one thing. Don't fight your instinct to lay low for a while. Fishing is in your blood . You are a lifer. Me too. I gave it up however and took up flying large aerobatic R/C planes for six years before I got my line wet again.Sure I dabbled on the river but in comparison to the hours I spent in the past it was like I quit cold turkey. For those who knew me from the fishing scene, and if you ask them, it was like I fell off the face of the earth. It was hard at times to ignore my good friend "fishing" but I had definitely reached my limit and officially burned out. So many reasons. So much more than some slow times. I hear yah. I have to say that I am officially back and at it with the same passion that I have ever had. May not be on the water 300+ days a year but the days I do manage to get out are very fullfilling for my own personal reasons. Don't be so hard on yourself. We all need to take a break sometimes. Doesn't mean you are giving it up for good. A break is good.

Here we go its Derby time. Will have to work hard for them, but only need one or maybe two big hogs. Tight lines boys !!

Tournament Proven !

It has not been a terrible season. Just a terrible August.
My best hali season yet, great June fishing, good July fishing and great coho fishing this year! A lot of good weather and (knock wood) less foggy days this year!

good luck to all in the derby... hopefully the slabs co operate!

Great Hali season:D

Huge Coho, can't wait till October in my honey hole[:p]

August was better in Langford lake for Big Springs[:0]

Tons of Feeders that should stick around for the winter with all of the herring stacked up! Should make for some good Christmas fishing.

Crabbing was Phenominal.....

Remember it is Sooke, Dont set you expectations to high.

Well said Mark! Some good points there.

I do feel for Wolf though, i am bloody burn't to a crisp, juggling a full time job a 1 year old and a busy season wich keeps going until November if the Hali stays open. but still can't wait for the next day. A bad day fishing is better than any day at work[:p]

Sorry for my ignorance but can anyone tell me which derby is on this weekend please.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

Otter for me this morning... got out late but got my two quickly. 18 and 22. Wolfy, I agree with Highlights totally. Fishing is in your blood and it would be a total tragety for you to leave for good. Take some time off and regroup for awhile. I have learned a ton off you in the past few years and I saw how much you enjoyed yourself on our trip this year. Maybe a year of sport fishing for fun would do you a world of good.? If you do sell the rig however, you have a spot on my boat anytime you want it. That is if you can handle the smoke! [:p]
