Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

I remember back a few weeks there was an announcement of a commercial opening on the West coast for big springs (large Plugs only). I remember thinking at the time that it would be interesting if big spring sport fishing died off in the strait right after it. Any thoughts about a connection?

Thanks guys but there are other issues pressing ill still be fishing trust me on that may be time to rethink what i am going to do. thats all so when i do make a descision maybe you know of someone that would want a great proven boat which runs great and is turn key.

ive been staying in sooke so ill be home later this weekend to see if anyone e-mailed me.

Now for a report one word slow, slow, slow maybe we could wish that todays rain is going to bring em in because it was just pouring out there today almost 3 hours of good hard rain really good to see as maybe the woods will open and I can go kill a deer LOL.

Good luck Wolf

Hey Wolfie, saw you run past me and head to the trap. I fished all day, and got 1 hatchery Coho 7 pounds, and lost a teenager on the tide lines. 1st decent spring in 2 weeks, if you dont count a few 13-15 pounders. I havent seen it this poor in a long time. And from the renfrew reports it doesent seem to be picking up any. Lets hope this is not the end for this year.

Yes it poured today, heavy rain. reminded me of one year i ran up to nitnat. man it rained solid like that for 12 hours. and we pounded it out for a limit of 6 springs.

Nice night on the water last night but fishing was slow. Made a few passes around Posession and Secretary. Saw 1 boat snap off what looked like a nice fish and that was it. Headed out to 450-500 ft mark and hit 1 wild coho and a bunch of undersize springs.

looks like no-bananas has the #2 spot in the classic - but only 4 fished weighed in, can you say slow......

Well, I'd assume more than 4 have been caught - I'm sure word gets around and from 11:30 on, you need a tyee to win anything - they aren't going to waste time weighing in a 25 now if its worth nothing to them and takes their rod out of the water for an hour. I'm sure there are more decent fish sitting on boats or released.

I just got word from a buddy fishing this morning. No springs for him but the guy beside him got a 37lber on a pink squirt at 30ft. You just never know what will turn their crank.

it was definately nice out there last night...1 decent size pink, and had to release Derricks largest Coho approx 12lbs

A good year for the kid ...he is having a blast

Hey Smiley we fished possession yesterday 830-1030 before the wind came up.Found one spring,15lb at 40 feet- pretty dark looked like a sooke fish.Looked to be pretty slow for springs but lots of coho.Good luck

Hey Roy,we had that conversation about three years ago,but the shoe was on the other foot remember? You gave me nothing but encourgement, and positive talk.I'm still "off" on catching but enjoying fishing more than ever.YOU made an old guy rethink things. We'll keep in touch.Dan

Pack it up Smiley, your done bud.

LOL just kidding. I'd still hit it but be prepared to work.

Coho just getting really good with the size of them being unreal this year.

Did anyone get into a good number of coho or pinks this weekend? If so where were they thickest?

Thanks

Got into a Butt Load of Pinks and Coho straight out from Sheringham on Friday. Not sure on depth, sounder wasn't picking up bottom??? we were out a ways though...Both pinks and coho were nice size.
Three of us on boat and limits in no time!
40-90ft. Pink hootchies worked for both.

Cheers

You weren't picking up bottom because the sonar pulse was being bounced off the backs of all the salmon.

.......seriously.

I was in 550' of water and the sonar said I was in 23'. Dropped the line to that depth and it was non stop coho all day.

Was out from 7 to 1 pm today saw one guy dip his net for a very small spring with all this rain You might as well kiss the rest off the season "goodbye" for some big springs coho maybe around and the odd spring but consider it done just like last year!!!!!!
