Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

last night was a beautiful night - one of the rare ones where there isn't a breeze or wave to be seen. Stunning.
We got out there at 4:30 and fished till 8:30.
3 springs 6-10 lbs, 1 wild coho, 7 pinks.
and we saw the porposes!

I was out yesterday 10 to 2 pm. Missed the good spring bite which was at O'Brian from 6 to 7:30 according to a friend I talked to at the dock. Saw a couple springs hooked around 11. Got three hatchery cohos and 5 pinks for our limit. Back at the cleaning station saw 6 springs for 4 boats (a couple near 30), all caught before 8 am.

I was fishing pedder yesterday and wow there was a lot of bait! Like 100 foot bait balls but also a lot of dogs. There are so many dog fish around I saw them on the surface.

Plenty of BIG pinks and lot and lots of 5-10lb springs but no big ones :(

I guess someone loves doggies...they obviously do not loose packs of bait to them.

About time someone got pinched for this.Never did understand the mentality. In all my years of guiding the west coast I am still in disbeleif when I see someone purposely injure a non targeted species. Does maming a single dogfish really make a differance on the whole? What , do we want to stearilize the entire ocean of everything that swims except for salmon? Doesn't work that way. It is an entire food web. When fishing we are going to encounter all sorts of surprises. I don't know how some people can bode well with the "fish gods" when they are sliceing and dicing accidental catches leaving them to die an agonizing death. The general public catches wind of such things and our chances of being seen as a respectful group goes in the tank.

I hit my biggest springs at almost 3kts. No doggie ever goinig to chase that.

Yeah, i find the faster troll to be the key! i have been Smashed really good at 4.5 a few times, when the current is ripping good. Was out lastnight, Wow, can you say windy. Fished 5-7:30 hit 8 feeder springs all released. and one small wild coho. Today must have been windy as heck again.

Early morning showed more promise today, was kept busy for a couple hours chasing rods. (small spring/coho) Hit 4 springs, landed 2 10-12 pounders early then had a good one straighten a hook mid morning. Finished with a 40 pounder before noon which fooled me as I guessed 33 -34 pounds, don't often miss an estimate by that much. It was a nice surprise back at the dock. Saw more springs hit and landed today than I have the last 4 or 5 days. Maybe things are turning around again. The rain may bring the fish in from up coast.

Got out on Wed and man was it slow at possession early morning-didnt see one decent spring caught.Decided to go out and play on the tidelines and noticed a huge blue dragger working in about 600 feet of water dragging from beechy head to otter.I saw a huge (like 2 mile)flock of seagulls following him so I decided to check it out.Behind that boat was at least a 2 mile continuous 'slick' of dead fish.Big fish, little fish most looked to be Hake.Really sad to see such a wasteful fishery going on in our own backyard[V]I took a few crappy pics I will post soon.On the bright side I did find a 10 pound spring mixed in with the coho and pinks.

Fished Aldridge from 6-8. Couple of feeder springs under 10lb and a pink. Lost a few other pinks.
A bit of a wind and a strong flood when we got out. The last 1/2 hour was calm and looked fishy. Bite probably came on a 8:05.

Oh ya... whales everywhere!

Tips

(off to Renny tonight!)

agree with wolf!!

out there today from 6-noon... fished muir and otter area, not a slab to be had, didnt see a spring landed or a net out all day! got a few shakers here and there, then out to the tide lines... only managed 3 pinks and a nice hatchery coho - seemed we couldnt even get into the pinks and 'ho's!

oh well...next time.
