Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

So.......anyone venture out today? Or are we all still recovering.

Thinking of going out Thursday or Friday.

Wonder if any descent schools have pushed in.

We were out today. Got one Spring (19 lbs) at Otter and lost another. Also got a 5 lb hatchery coho and released a couple of smaller springs, one of which was a hatchery fish. Heard of a lot of small coho being caught and lots of bait in the water.

What’s with all the coho? We were out this morning looking for springs and they just nailed our anchovies, - tried fishing under them and got one at 90 feet and got another one while dragging the flasher in on the surface after the downrigger release. I don’t recall seeing these numbers in years. Some are clipped and they are around 5 lbs. Others were also catching them. It’s like running into a school of pinks. Why so many this year, have the US hatcheries been working overtime?

Yup, second that. Never seen so many coho and so early in the strait. Some small springs (5 - 9 lbs) mixed in as well. No pinks yet...at least for me. Saw a couple of huge springs being netted but otherwise slow for the larger springs. Bait literally everywhere.

The Coho are nothing unusual for June, just indicates a possible good fall coming. They will hang a round if the feed does into July. They seem to prefer being offshore in August and then reappear by mid-September.

Got the cabin booked at Sunny Shores again,, Aug 10th - 15th. Now we count the days. See you boys then and save a few for me eh ;) ;)

Took a run up to Muir Creek yesterday. Unreal fishing! Went thru three packs of bait. Caught a mixed bag of wild, hatchery coho and springs up to ten pounds. Wound up killing one nice hatchery coho and called it a day.Only seen a couple of decent springs caught heard the trap and and head were ok in the early am. Cheers Fc

Sounds like it's time to break out the egg spoons and light gear for the coho. 1 more week of work...

Profisher, ya pulling your boat out this weekend? Saw you driving up the colwood strip yesterday with your trailer. Hoping for some more reports....

Went out with the kids this morning off Possesion at about 930. As the first rod was going down it tripped. Disgusted with my clip set i ripped the rod out of the holder just in time for it to scream away 100 miles per hr. I swear the flasher was only under 10 ft before it tripped. 25 minutes later we put a 31.5 in the bucket. Go figure. Fished about another half hour or so and picked up about a ten off the point. Couldn't bring myself to bonk it, and went home. Only spent an hr or so on the water. Not a bad way for my 6 year old to start her summer vacation. :D

Not bad for you either, Addicted! Nice fish. I'll be at Possession/Secretary tomorrow.
