Early Halibut Opening

The time is NOW for the public fishery (rec sector) to push hard to get more than 15% of the TAC!! They did in in WA state we can do the same here!

It is a no brainer that the public fishery generates more way money for the economy then the commercial sector does when it comes to the halibut fishery. This is what we need to push our politicians for.
We did it years back, used to be 88/12, PM came to Comox I believe on Easter weekend to save John Duncans butt in that election. Told us he would get us more TAC. if we voted Conservative. We did and with a swipe of a pen we got more TAC. It can be done again, people just have to rally together and that seems to be the hardest part. Not many want to get their hands dirty anymore

That was 8 months of my life and time I will never get back again.. Would be about the right timing some new blood doing the heavy lifting and actually see sport fisherman work together not against each other.

Well…one can try. But if not part of ol boys club (maybe better to say the mentality of it) often denied…minus a couple of ya (you’re good Deryk!). Went over this with you.

I’ve seen the amount of thankless volunteer work you and others have put into our fisheries. I can only imagine how frustrating it is when there’s no good outcome available and people who won’t get involved in the process sling mud. Anyways a big thanks to everyone involved for the effort and hopefully we can work towards making this a more viable fishery again.

So why are they/we beating around the bush with this? Every time I take a new person out fishing and ask them to print a license, or explain that the digital version is optional, they all laugh. People have been taking advantage of that archaic system for years. The argument that we need to wait for all the non phone using old dogs to die before we can implement this "new" method is hilarious. As if all of these guys aren't sending texts and pictures to their buddies and wives while they're out there already. There is no barrier to using technology anymore. If the poor old-timer can't figure it out by now, then maybe the guy he's paying good money to take him can do it for him. Sorry if I'm offending anyone here 🙃. Love you all.
100% agree

Look at the limited entry process for hunting now vs 10 years ago. I don’t even know if you can submit paper mail in entries anymore.

If you want to play figure it out !

But really it all comes down to honesty and participation by the user if we want accurate data.

Also going down to a 80cm > max limit/ for possession is going to be tough unless your fishing the banks and it’s tough to warrant the expense for a 9lb Hali

Was a heck of a lot of hard work, but it worked, paid off and we got more. It's been a long time since the rec sector has all banded together, we do have an election looming and would be a great time to make it an election issue for sure. Happy to be a part of it again if someone wants to get the ball rolling.

Yes.. it was great working with you back in the day.. beyond me however there are those whom I can talk too

I agree with SG2. Salmon talks are getting interesting also. Luberals and NDP are about reconciliation not Rec access for rich rec fishers .. .. sad but true.

Not gonna derail this thread but please educate yourself on actual policies before spouting liberal rhetoric. (Vote liberal or NDP and see how you won’t even be allowed to fish for Chinook and other species. Nevermind catch and release) Feel free to PM.

Back to halibut….
Who said I’m voting NDP or Liberal? Supporting someone doesn’t mean blind loyalty—it means pushing them to be better. Poilievre has been losing support lately, and his U.S.-style rhetoric is part of the problem. With growing anti-Trump and anti-U.S. sentiment in Canada, he needs to shift focus to real policy if he wants to win over more voters.

Sorry for the derail.
