Aquaculture improving?..The Fish Farm Thread

Fish farms are indeed a drop in the bucket - they pay next to nothing for pad rent compared to other countries. And they cost the government $ spent in the Aquaculture Department & C&P. The money generated by this industry goes back to the foreign shareholders (mostly Norwegian) - not the government and taxpayers that pick up the bill for MILLIONS of $ spent in the Aquaculture Department & C&P.

More $ goes back to those shareholders if the industry continues to receive free pumping, free sewerage disposal, and free real estate - which is why they are so committed to the ONP technology. It's all about the $ - not protecting wild salmon which make much more money domestically for everyone from tackle sellers to commercial fishermen.

In addition, the economic analysis quoted by Kennedy that can be found at:

also notes that a push to remake the industry on land would create more well-paying, full-time jobs – as well as provide a jolt of tax revenue for the province.

I noticed that Kennedy pointedly avoids admitting all these inconvenient facts and this one:

I mainly posted that to show salmon farming has declined and that production has simply not just moved elsewhere in BC. Canada's economy is basically based on housing and construction.

"That increase follows a fall in Canadian farmed salmon production from a peak of 148,000 tonnes in 2016 to 90,000 tonnes in 2023, its lowest level since 2000. The CAIA says the fall is primarily due to former fisheries minister Bernadette Jordan’s 2020 decision not to renew licences for 19 farms in the Discovery Islands, BC."

Transition Plan is delayed again, not being released in July as stated a while back. Now 2 years delayed ............................. I wonder why ?

A few more idiotic ad ignored statements from FF's.

They say they employ "X" number of employees. They know the number right? So who are they? They can designate a job title instead of a name to keep to privacy and secrecy requirements. But each job! And how much they pay that position.

Are they counting the mail man? Anyone who touches anything to do with them regardless if they pay them? Let's see the payrolls with names blacked out. They know this information, it is very easy for them to get they have to report to Canada Revenue, Workers Compensation and other government agencies.

How many do they directly employee?
A fish farm isn't like a car lot where there are mechanics getting paid or the old sawmills that had 6 or 7 hundred employees in one location.

And land based, that could be another problem if used water (may contain bio hazards) is flushed into a river system, say like the Cowichan or Nanaimo rivers.

There is a salmon rearing plant that gets the Norwegian smolts or eggs and rears them on land, have been for years but would not those smolts have been infected too?

There was already evidence that FF's just flushed the contaminated guts into the ocean by fish processors and infected many rock fish, that's old news but if that was ignored then what about effluent water from raising smolts? Anyone ever check? They are land based s do they just not get checked at all because they are not in federal waters?

I have heard of one in Sumas near the Cowichan river, very near and now many of the rivers, streams and tributaries are "protected" due to salmon declines. IF these viruses infect wild migrating salmon why not those in proximity to where these waters go?

Man would I ever love to be on a panel to ask and demand answers. Even if some of the supporting FN's were present. BTW I support FN's rights to fish their traditional waters but I do not support FF's in their waters, they never had that in their history on these scales. I would also try to assign responsibility to pollution rules to FN's FFs, FF stay in one place but the contaminated water goes all over the place, if it was oil they would be responsible, why not bio hazards or effluent too?

FFs won't start the transition plans? Fine then have the government do it. It isn't rocket science. The fish take so long to mature and harvest, they know exactly how long, so don't start after a certain date. That would be a gradual cessation as each farms salmon were harvested.

Who needs MOWI to do land based FFs anyway? They don't do it now so it isn't like they are experts. Why should a foreign country take millions out of BC instead of a home grown solution? FF's financial numbers show it to be an extremely lucrative industry. Why not "joe public" start a coop and get the millions from the governments are paying them instead? The money stays in BC and using FF's employment number would create 10's of thousands of jobs, mail men, road repair people, telephone people, government oversight employees, DFO employees, government staffers, marketers, influencers and lobbyists? AND the 300 to ? hundred they actually pay?
I had a small trucking company with 8 or 9 direct paid employees but I could boast I supported 5 or 6 hundred people indirectly, indirectly giving/supporting their jobs on a much smaller, tiny impact but still I had an effect. Mechanic, tires, fuel, grocery clerks, mail people, accountants, banks, truck sales, there are loads that can be included if looking for BIG numbers.

So the FFs can start the second generation and go past the closure date by a year. 3 years for each generation I believe

At this point i'm more interested to see what the Cons have to say since they are most likely to govern next

Interesting indeed as the Cons. will have to think carefully about this - do they support the public fishery, or in this case the foreign owned industrial fishery? Citizens need to demand that they state their party policy position on this before the election!

The history for the Cons. in the past has been to support big corporate interests over local communities first and foremost. Hopefully, they are different this time.
