2024 Sidney Reports

Ended up trolling for literally 30 seconds between crabbing and Prawning 10 traps it was busy 20 hours. Crab traps alternated finding dungies with 7 and my 6 old prawn traps had two shrimp but my new string, tied up as I dropped, had about 75 and 50 prawns. Only had time for one set between getting cheap gas at Costco, down to $1.51 for Reg in Vic, and cleaning up the boat. Probably not deep enough but seemed like all 4 ended up landing about 200. I usually target 250-230. Hit Rocksalt to take my son and his grandma for pastries while they soaked.
I usually set my prawn traps between 180 and 250 feet of water

It is looking like it will be a good year for Winter Chinook. Took advantage of the weather on Saturday and started at Fairfax landed a couple of just under, and lost one at the boat. moved over to Coal and picked up a nice 9# bouncing bottom with a cop car

Sunday/monday I struck out crabbing at Sindey spit, in 35ish feet of water with lots of bait in 3 different spots over 24 hours. Maybe they are deeper right now? I had the puller on board, so I could have tried deep, but with the wind and current, and no one else able run the puller or the boat, it was better to stick in close.

I heard a good report at the launch and saw a spring in the bucket on Monday afternoon.

Anyone know what happened to the second dock at Tsulista? My friend sent me a text like it had blown away in the storm. When will it be back in if it was pulled?

Thanks to the volunteers for keeping the ramp going in the summer and all you guys do to keep it running year-round.

The dock is fine! It goes away every year at this time. I believe it comes back around May

Was able to make it out between the windy days around Sidney. Went out from 11:00-15:30 it was a busy day 5 fish to the boat and 2 in the boat. Fished James Island/ powder wharf caught all five at 125 on the DR bouncing the bottom using a no bananas flasher and spoon.

Went out prawning today to test boat out. Prawned outside of Patricia bay. Only got 2 prawns in 2 hours soak. Drag some gears around just for the heck of it. Got 2 soles. No spring.

How deep, I have seen a dispersal of prawns in yhe inlet at this time of year in that area into shallower water. Prawns are very sensitive to dissolved oxygen levels. So if you got more than normal amounts of squat lobsters at your regular depth try shallower

We dropped our trap in 218 and 190'. No squat lobster and no coon stripes also. I guess will bring out more ropes next time out to try different depth instead of stringing two to a line.

I fished Fairfax this Monday. Hopefully a good sign of things to come this winter. Got about 10 bites in 3 hours, half were right around legal size and I kept the biggest which was 66cm for supper. A mix of fingerling herring and needlefish in the stomach.
