The shortest day of the year. Happy Solstice, at least for me because I got out on the boat away from all the nonsense.
Never sure where to post this as I launched out of Mill Bay into the Saanich part of Area 19. Water was very murky everywhere. Put the traps down and headed over to Wain Rk. after having a quick look at the Mars Water bomber, tied up in Pat Bay.
Tons of prawn traps to avoid but once clear I dropped the salmon gear off Moses pt.
An old guide from CR., Bruce A. told me his guide friend used gold hoochies in the inlet. Not sure if he was yanking my chain or not, I've never heard of anyone using gold hootchies around here, but but I thought I'd give one 15 mins. It only needed 3 mins. Both rods went off, the first one with a spoon had a spring of about 6lbs, the fish waiting patiently on the other rod, with the gold ended up being a beauty 77cm, weighing 11lbs. Not bad for a winter.
Continued East along Lands End following the 100' - 120' contour. Released half dozen more in the 3-5lb range and then the shakers got thick. Less shakers closer to Moses.
Prawning was good. Kept 100 good sized ones. Dragged an adrift kayak to shore. Fortunately no body attached, at least not anymore.
. Dead slow to start but chatted with a fellow boater who had a double header.
