2024 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Reports

Headed up on Monday with the misses camping at Tuta. Not taking the boat as a buddy is there and I'll jump in with him for a couple days.
Who is running Tuta this year? Haven't been there for any years. Do you have a contact number?

Any recent Nootka reports? Blowing on gale force off Esperanza. I'm looking for some options for fishing. Thinking of running to Nootka

We fished out of Critter Cove last week, July 8-14. To say it was slow would be an understatement, inside and out. There was a brown colour to the water from Beano to Escalante to Discovery and the Lighthouse. As the week progressed fish were starting to show up again. Some were having success near Maquinna while we fished inside at Coopte, Hoiss and Beer Can Bay. Our best success was at the north end of the bay, as mentioned by Mervillite, 55' and 90' on the rigger using anchovy. Looks like its picking up for another great year.

We have been there multiple times when the brown algae bloom happens, it makes for tough fishing. Not sure why, blocks light is my best guess but who knows how deep it goes. Even turns off bottom fishing in my experience

Yup, same experience here. You may get the odd ling or hali with bait but dead sea otherwise. I also think the limited visibility is driving the salmon away. Sucks when this hapoens during your long awaited nootka trip.

Just got back from Critter Cove July 7-14. As mentioned previously the fishing outside was abnormally slow at the standard outside locations. At the beginning of the trip, the winds were down which enabled us to get offshore which was moderately productive for bottomfish. The winds then came up quite strong and it was quite “sporty” out there. Definitely needed your sea-legs to stay upright in the boat. 3 or 4 days with very few chinook salmon showing up at the cleaning tables. That changed on Friday/Saturday when a fresh batch of good strong chinook arrived outside. As many fish over20 lbs as there were under 20 lbs for us. Skinny G’s seemed to work for us, down around 35 - 40 feet. Although I prefer not to, when the fishing was slow outside early in the week, I did fish inside a couple of times without success. I marked a fair number of fish inside at the normal spots, just couldn‘t entice them. That all changed when the fresh fish showed up outside on Friday and things returned to normal. Overall, a real mixed bag as far as productivity is concerned.

Chatted with a buddy up a Tuta this morning. Larry is waiting till the freezers are needed before he plugs them in. Cheers, Rob

Heading to Nootka next week. Been out of the game for quite a few years. Have no Skinny G's in my fun box. What are everyone's favorites. any other Nootka go To's other than chovies?
