2024 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Reports

Any reports from Nootka? Any word on the coho fishing?
Heading up for a September fishing trip next week. Just wondering how fishing has been.

I am thinking of the same thing. Went thru Gold River today and the weather was unbelievable. 22 at 11am

Lot's of fish around the mouth of Gold River. Most of them are still pretty silver.

Between the mouth and Black Beach.

I just got back from Nootka yesterday. Fished inside and out for two days and not a Salmon to be had by us or any of the three other boats we talked to there. I even talked to a local old timer yesterday who fished the morning with his daughter, near the boat launch at Gold River and not even a bite. My friend came out last week to fish Nootka like we did last year and we decided to stay home here in Victoria, since I had been on a good run of salmon here at home and my friend really want to target salmon. When my son got here last Friday we decided to go to Nootka despite all the credible negative reports on Salmon, I just couldn't believe the Coho weren't going to be there after last years run. The thing is we also had the option to go to the offshore to "Walmart" where you can get anything you want as long as you have good weather. We were desperate not to get skunked, so in spite of a 2m swell combined with a .5m chop, we went 20 km off the light house. The 100ft deep water where the Walmart is located magnified the sea conditions to the point that I asked my son if he even wanted to fish when we got there. He said yea might as well try were here. To make a long story short he got one line down and within 30 seconds he had a ling that measured 44" We end up limiting out (6) on Ling with the smallest we kept was 37" We also kept 5 rock fish, one behemoth we guesstimate to be 8 pounds +- and descended 4 smaller ones. We went back to Walmart yesterday morning and caught one more ling and one rock fish and descended 3 small rock fish. In the end it was an awesome trip. Not what we were went for but awesome all the same. Tuesday after fighting on the set of "The Deadliest Catch" we were on anchor by 16:00 then BBQ and a couple Sailor Jerries and Coke and in bed sleeping like babies before 20:00. Man that's a lot of work operating in those heavy seas. The KingFisher 3025 worked flawlessly albeit I kept both engines running while trolling just in case.

man…i have massive respect for that entire area. know every single hot spot and many ling spots that will go to the grave with me. never heard of walmart and i don’t know if i want to to be honest

My friend got a half price guided fishing trip to Nootka in June a few years back. The salmon fishing was super slow in June (go figure). One morning our guide asked us if we wanted to go to Walmart. We said WTF. He said he called it Walmart because you can get anything you want there including Salmon. Buddy and I caught a 63lb Hali (before the size was reduced) and a 40lb Ling and other fish. I had intermittent cell service while we were out there (even this week), but I manage drop a couple of pins that I saved with my life. When I got my boat two summer ago its was the first trip I made. I'm not sure if anyone else calls it Walmart, but my friends and family do. I've never seen another boat there. Its a tough piece of water at the best of times as I'm sure you already know. I found out the hard way, friends that have a tendency to be queasy campers can keep you away from Walmart.
P.S.
Where the heck is the Cell signal coming from off shore. Hawaii???????

“Explosives Dump” perhaps is your Walmart?

I've heard of that spot-one year at Moutcha Bay someone with a large boat cruised in with piles & piles & piles of fish of all kinds they'd been to some mythical offshore place they wouldn't name.

They came in early because they knew they'd be at it for hours cleaning fish-and they were.

As someone has alluded to earlier-that water gets pretty rough-quickly-when I was guiding out of Westview I would occasionally drop down the inlet and into and out of Nootka to that area.. Trying to get a little calmer water than off-shore Esperanza-not sure it ever was and it sure didn't stay calmer (relative term) for long. Found the area back in 98 and always produced.

Yes it doesn't take much to get out of hand fast out there. It has a good fetch from Japan to get wound up. I usually troll with one motor, but out there I kept both running and didn't transfer to the cockpit station and operated from the helm. I wouldn't consider dropping a halibut anchor. I'm pretty sure that's why the fishing is so good. Not many people are crazy enough to go out there unless the weather is good. Hmm I guess that's why they call it "The Graveyard of the Pacific". It was pure magic to be there with my son all the same.
