It was one hell of a fight. I have auto pilot. So when I tried slowing down the boat the auto pilot couldn't keep up, I started spinning. So I took it out of auto and let the boat do what it wanted. I caught the fish by closer to t10 and ended up going through the sandheads gong show with the fish. Guys could see I had something special and two people pulled their gear up as I passed which was really cool of them to do that. It was pouring rain and rough... How big do I figure? I don't even want to guess.
The elusive…… t**e …. That’s a hell of a long way to drift must’ve been a gooder.
I lost one what WOULDVE been my first last year at sandheads.
Got about half way out that morning and realized…. The net was gone along with one of the bolt of rod holders that mount to the rails of boats I had stupidly forgotten to put lock tight in.
Too late to head back already half way there… we had a gaf… figured I’d guide my buddies and work on my gaffing that day. What could go wrong?
Hooked into by far the biggest fish of my life (caught many in the low to mid 20s). Fought like nothing I’d ever been onto before. Same thing COULD NOT get it close to the boat without turning the motor off completely. Not ideal in peak season at sandheads. Oh ya and there’s a commercial guy dropping ******* crab or prawn traps or some **** right beside me. Not like he gives a **** I’m into a tyee.
Anyways finally got it up to the boat, once …. *Green buddy*swing and a miss
Twice … swing and a miss
Third time… I’m essentially a rabid dog foaming at the mouth at this point “Silvio this is your ******* chance don’t **** it up”
He grabs the flasher with his hand to try and get the fish just a liiittttttle bit closer. SNAP, fish goes for another dive and the flasher snaps in half against the corner of the boat gunnel. Not at all his fault, wasn’t mad at him, (just myself). I set him up for failure. With a net we would’ve had it, I’m certain.
I keep the flasher above the door in my bedroom as a reminder of the one that got away.
Sorry for the rant. It’s been over a year but I still need to vent.
Moral of the story bring your net and always be ready for the big one.
Sorry to hear he got away, you’ll get him next year. That’s what I keep telling myself anyways.
