2021 Vancouver-Howe Sound-Sechelt Reports Thread

The reality of the Howe Sound proposal is it will come down to politics... again. The DFO has provided their feedback on the Howe Sound area 28 proposal and all the SFAB proposals. Now the proposals are getting feedback from the other stakeholders. The MCC (ENGOS) are vigorously opposed and the First Nations will likely follow suit. This decision would go through at the Departmental level without significant opposition, but the writing is seemingly on the wall for a decision on the Ministerial level. Time to call MP Terry Beech's office relentlessly for the next couple weeks if you have time. Soon we will all only be fishing Como Lake for stocked trout the way access is being ripped away from Canadians.

Went up the sound today with gal. Was a little brisk, tucked out of wind and trolled for hour backside Bowen. Lots of bait(lots of it suspended). Scooped into Gibson’s and had a great lunch at Mollys Reach and then pulled prawn traps on way home. Little tougher finding them today but enough for a few meals and the rain held off so can’t complain! No scenery shots today.

Today I only got out to the freighters, I went to buy gas and the debit machine was down. So I had 60 cash to work with. Needed to stay close. At the freighters I saw tons of bait and got no bite. I was using a herring aid spoon and a black glow flasher. Right at the bottom. Then trolled closer to the bell and switched to the chartreuse flasher and a bright green spoon. And got three quick fish all under. Two close to keepers and one maybe 40cm. It was good because I had to net one solo, went well, which doesn't happen often. I had to leave at 11:45. But a ton of bait around.

Got a late start this morning as I waited for the overnight gale and heavy rain to subside. So, didn’t have the lines in till 10. Fished HITW to Newman Crk until about 4. Only one under and three pin-poppers which didn’t stick. Very slow for me. Was assaulted by a very heavy hailstorm midday.

I too launched for the first time this year to fish HITW. As soon as I cleared the marina I dropped the line. Before I even had a chance to tighten it fish on. A nice 45 under to start the season. We would get bands of clouds rolling thru with winds and rain only to pass and see a little sun. Then one very large dark cloud formation started coming our way which didn't look good. Decided to troll back to the marina in hopes we could beat it. We'll sure as he'll it caught up to us. Raining sideways wind blowing and bouncing like mad in the water. I looked at my son and said hope we don't get a hit in these conditions. We'll it happened. My rod starts shaking and I'm out there getting soaked and holding on for dear life in the waves. But as any other fisherman would do the hell with the weather fish on. To make matters worse the line gets caught up in the reel to add to the challenge. But in the end I prevailed and landed a keeper. One minute later same weather conditions and my sons rod starts screaming. We could tell this was a big one as it was run after run. Damn the weather we were not going to lose this one. Had to maneuver the boat sideways to the waves to line him up and net it. What a hog!!!! Biggest I have ever seen for around here and this time of year in 10 yrs of fishing this area. Just a guess around 18-20 lbs. Please no comments on guessed weight as that is not the point. It was a female and white. So can anyone suggest where it may be from as that size and white are not unique for this time of year. We have 7 more shakers to fill the day. Also interesting that the bouncing of the boat and rods was the reason for the hitsHope I can attach a picture received_275623014149909.jpeg20210307_120044.jpg

put a nice mid teener in the box just now, suspended about 50’ off bottom, plugged with 9 inch herring
Very nice fish
Where you trolling back and forth across the actual pass on the Strait of Georgia side?
I have only fished Polier once and it was inside and just south

What a nice fish and great you could land it in those conditions
What where you using? Spoon I imagine but what type and size?
I’ve had luck on the bottom with small coho killers and skinny G’s
