Hey Roddy
Wow, you were out for 40 hrs this week in that wind??? That's impressive, don't give up - maybe you just need the Socks to show up - LOL!!! There are TONS of parameters to deal with, inc. tides as well. It was (and still mostly is) and can be very frustrating fishing for all of us out there to - that's why this forum can be very helpful. I also went out tons before I ever hooked anything here. I took everyone's good advice and went out a few times on Bonchovy (not an inexpensive option) and I also did the course at Pacific Angler. The course was great value for money IMHO. They want to help you. I never had anyone to show me the ropes, so I needed all the help I could get. This place ain't Nootka or the island...
Keep it simple, wash your hands with sunlight soap before you touch your gear, don't gas up on your way out, no fried chicken on board, know the implications and where to fish on certain tides, leader lengths for hootchies, chovies and spoons (they all differ), etc. etc.
The local tackle stores also help you - they know their stuff (and will probably try and sell you a little more than what you really need), but they are an excellent option too. Canadian Tire has gear, but no expertise.
Just keep at it, and, as someone said earlier, it's still lots of fun getting out there even if you don't catch anything.
Take a good friend with you, and it'll always be a fun day on the water.
