Sooke Reports - Spring/Summer 09

Trap Shack today, from 7-11 am, a 20 and a 13 and one lost. Saw a number of fish caught beside us. Good and steady bite. But the dog got sea sick [xx(]

No Dudds I was restricted to Otter Point in those days. Just knew the guys from there. Seiners used to try and swamp us in those days. More than one sporty lobbed slip weights through the wheelhouse windows in protest. Saw a few chases, kinda funny seeing a big seiner trying to twist and turn with the runabouts. Lucky no one got shot at!

..........what a snotty late afternoon/evening!!!

Thought I give it a shot considering evryone else seems to be troupers latley and getting payoff. Damn . I saw only three other boats between Secretary and Pedder. Guess the 42kt. wind was a little blustery now that I think of it.

Fished Possession yesterday from 545am - 1130am. Had 1 in the boat by 615am and before that one was in the tub we had anoter one on and boated by 630am. Both teenagagers, right of the point, 1 at 70ft and 1 at 80ft. Caught one on each set up, purple hot spot, purple haze head, 5ft leader the other combo was a Betsey flasher Bloody nose head, 7 ft leader. Saw 4 other fish caught up until 730am and then it went a bit quiet. We had another chance at one at 930am but lost it. Addicted pulled up beside us at 10am and he got into 2 right away off Secretary but lost them both, 80ft off the rigger, Betsey with clear blue head. That new boat is fishey Kev!! We hooked and landed another teenager at 1115am off Possession, 70ft,Betsey/Bloody Nose. 15 minutes later the winds got very snotty and it was time to go. Started the day with 17 boats and by 10am there was only 5, heard there might of been a snap West around 930 am.
Didn't feel like going home so we stopped and fished Oak Bay from 2pm until 430pm. Lots of bait out there, 7 other boats off Brodie Rock. We had Electric chair on one side and bait on the other, switched the bait rod to a purple haze hootchie/purple hot
spot, Bang!, as soon as it hit bottom fish on!, a 22lb spring, 112ft. Didn't see anything else cuaght but know that Ocean Rambler put one in the tub around 330pm closer to the Gap. Ocean Rambler also had 2 in the 20's the prvious day, bait, closer to the Gap. Good luck to all!!

Got the call from Justin:( Iam at work and he is fishing with a group....3 halis in the boat by 8:30

now he is working on the Springs

Chris I was that way on sat and sunday

Yes it was a good day, 4 hali, 45 minutes, released the last one, almost released my finger too. Dropped the Salmon Gear for Springs at Church, good snap on when we got there some good fish came in a 36, some 30s etc. Lots of feed and fish on the screen, lots of gummy bites for us , one pin popper and the rest just would not stick. Shields put 4 Slabs in the boat to 30# today. Line up at the cleaning tables. Lots of Chatter about the Head and Trap turning on too.

I think the Derby is going to be a gooder!

Our fish was 42.4 lbs on the Digi Scale on the boat, 38 lbs at Pedders Scale later. Watch the rods real close though, that fish was just gumming the bait, light taps, I dumped the rigger brake with one hand and set the rod with the other to pop the pin and get a good set.
