Sounds like I might have to hit Sooke for a day or two! I started fishing Sooke in 1974. A lil longer than Profish!

Take only what you need.

Lipripper...;)

Assassin, started fishing in Sooke in 1965-66. Had my own boat in 1972 and fished when I was 13 years old. Fished from our Gordon's Beach cabin which we still have. Started taking paid trips in 1986. That all was a lot of hair and pounds ago.

The name is familiar..how about Gordie Bell, Frank Frost, Jumbo & Albie Davies, Jimmy Fleet & Jack Young. Even Alec Merriman had a cabin there on the beach and I used to hang out there once in awhile to hear the stories of the old days. The only guy left from that era that still fishes the same way as the old days is Ken Campbell. We all had 12 foot boats with 5 1/2 to 9 1/2 HP OB's. Frank Frost had the monster power... a 20 HP merc on a 14 footer..lol Fun times, no sounders, no riggers, no radios and only about 10 boats fishing Otter Point on the weekends.

The biggest change is that back then we also had a "putters license" no not pro-golfers. For $1.00 you could buy a license to sell your fish. We used to stop in a "Palies" place down on the government dock in Sooke and sell him our fish. Many of the guys had this and it was a way to make extra cash. Many of the old timers quit fishing all together when those licenses were no longer available. The one thing I never saw were the old fish traps. Just lots of stories about fishing along side of them and seeing all the fish you couldn't get to bite.

"Even Alec Merriman had a cabin there on the beach"...

In 1986 I and my first wife lived next door to Alec and Taffy's cabin so I got to know him a bit. Pretty neat guy all in all.
An old retired guy and his wife had the cabin east of us, we were the first cabin east of Merriman's, but they didn't live there full-time.
Neither did Alec of course.
I used to throw a frisbee for my Golden Lab across their lawn.
Alec really liked my dog, named Trooper, as he'd had a Golden Lab too. I recall he told me he was the first guy to ever win some BC Dog Trials event of note with that dog and it was the first "yellow" dog to ever win. He was proud of that.
The guy on the west side of Merriman's built a new driveway in 1986 but neglected to put in a culvert. After some torrential downpours from the El Nino storms the little creek across the road flooded the field whereupon the water ran over the highway into our front yard. This had happened before but the water always flowed west until it found its way across the beach to the ocean.
It couldn't do that now since Gordy the beekeeper had effectively created a dam with his new driveway.
He was known as Gordy Honey to the locals back then.
Our cabin ended up with a foot of water or more in it and the truck got flooded too.
I was away at the time and saw my wife and our truck and cabin on the news that night in Langley.
Helluva mess there for a while and all because of one thoughtless guy.

Had some fun times fishing out front and along to the point back then too.

Good times.

Take care.

Hey profisher, do you know Dave Mackereth - thats my grandpa, he used to have one of those licences too. He was a fireman that used to fish every morning then sleep at the hall, unless of course there was a fire. Interesting life style. He fished alot with Duff White. He said the Japanese commercial fishermen hated the "putter fleet" and would try to run him over! Ha! I think he also fished with Charlie Miller, but I might have mixed up the last names here. You know any of them?

Sorry about the hijack

I know Charlie Miller from way back he was fireman, on his 4 day off he would go fishing around the Oakbay flats area. He had what was called a B licence which allowed him to catch salmon and cod. I used to go out with him and his son Alfie those were the days! Charlie is still kicking around he's got to be in his late 80's way to go Charlie Cheers.

Thats pretty cool. I've heard a fair few stories about charlie. One time my gramps helped with a big halibut he hooked jigging in the gap. the two of them beached it - he guessed it around 200 but I don't think they ever weighed it. anyways, kind of neat.

back to fishing reports

picked up a 22 and 13lber yesterday, lost a 15-18 lber at the boat, seems like it is good out there lately...lots of fish coming in
