Seminar for Catch and release techniques of halibut

The thing I'm thinking about is 99% of the guys who attend the seminar won't catch a big fish for a few years if at all. If the late crocodile hunter gave a croc seminar would you wrestle one?

I think the best bet for a lot of people is attend the seminar - learn what you can - then when you catch one if your not 100% confident play it safe and cut the line.

Thanks for all the support guys, I fully agree wit you GDW for somone who doesnt deal with big halibut much just cutting the line is a good way to deal with the large fish. I would like to find a source other than owner for some non plated circle hooks as the galvanzized mustad ones do take forever to rust out. That makes sense though as they were originally designed for commercial use and commercial guys want to get milage out of their hooks. It can be noted that none of the marlin guys use galvanized hooks and they leave a majority of hooks in the fish.

Working on it right now

I don't have a low gunelled whaler either and i agree with safety first. I think its ridiculous to expect a sportfisherman to get a tape out in rolling seas while holding a halibut at the surface having the spreader bar weight bash against the boat while trying to release a fish. I've gone out to catch a halibut in choppy seas puked my guts out to do it and now you expect me to release it in good shape. If I ever caught a huge one I don"t mind chopping the line (100 + lbs) but that should be my call. I say 1/1 and call it a day close the fishery when the quota is up

I'll try and take some release videos this year, especially in big water.
It is a lot safer to cut a leader at the hook than to try and get a big girl in the boat.IMO
I measure fish against the harpoon stick, although trying to pinpoint if it's 49 or 51 inches may be a little tricky.

Edit- I mean kill and get a big girl in the boat.

For what it's worth: Alcahol works as a tranqualizer. Not sure if it f#$ks with their head for releasing though. Hope not. I used some Black Velvet before on an eighty pounder. After a couple shooters from my makeshift water/squirt bottle he crossed his eyes and submitted peacfully.

LOL Very nice fishmyster.. :)

Hmmmmm talking openly about booze in the boat? Nice!Public forum! Is it me or a wrong time and place thing!
I only transport booze aboard my vessel, not consume. How about rubbing alcahol? Any problem with that??
I knew someone would get their nose out of joint no mater what i post...lol

I quess In my opinion when having to actually release a big thrashing marginally legal or not legal Hali, attend seminars to have someone tell us the rights and wrongs of handling a commercial fishermans property!!The only place for that Black Velvet is in my highball glass and not getting a big momma hali in the mood for midnight snack on a commies longline!

If you can't handle the water or the fish then you shouldn't really be out there.

Hey mikep I can handle the water and the fish but if you think I'm burning 300 dollars of gas to release a fish that's in the question zone your in need of some medication. Like I said one and one and when they say we are done then we are done. And like I said it should be my call if I want to release a 100 lb fish or not.

yes this!!!!!,,opportunity for sport fishers is limited. whether by finance or by time...it SHOULD be our call or discretion whether we NEED the fish or not.
