Goals / plans for 2025 summer / fall season

With the season just around the corner , I’m interested in what goals and plans people have for the upcoming season . Could be new techniques , new fish species , new areas etc .

For our local waters , my goal is to downrigger fish as little as possible . I’ve been phasing out the typical down rigging slowly last few seasons in favour of jigging / live bait / cutplug motor mooching . With the right electronics it’s as or more productive in the right situations , and takes a bit more skill than the down rigger game .

Hoping we get the proper weather in September for our week of tuna fishing winter harbour , where we can attempt an over night drift out on the tuna grounds . Have done it a few times in MX , and with the right crew and conditions it makes for a nice evening . Very interested to see what comes up under the lights after dark out there , would be planning to fish a few squid down at 250’ and 300’ with some deep drop lights just for ***** and giggles .

We also will be trying to really dial in a few different bottom species with the pathetic halibut regs this year . Black cod in winter harbour , and petrale sole locally will be the main targets .

I want to fill my freezer with those delicious Cod that rolled into the harbour last June (or whenever that was)
Those fish are so unpredictable , they just roam around the strait in big schools , one year they are somewhere , next year somewhere else . There was people targeting and catching coolers full of nice 5 — 6 lbers up off the humps near kitty coleman this winter. I don’t think I saw any caught locally

Like Adanac I want to do more jigging for chinook, particularly when I’m in my kayak. As I get older pedaling my Hobie while dragging a 7 lb downrigger weight is becoming less and less attractive.

Thank Chris Bos et all for that one.

Goal is to try and make a living so my family can put food on table and can support my baby girl. Have some fun on shoulder seasons would be good too

Catch a halibut off Nanaimo. A unicorn 🦄 I know. But something to do while prawn traps soak and salmon are closed.
Yes! That’s an ambitious goal! I keep hoping for 1 myself. I lost a nice one at the boat last year at the gaff while fishing solo.

I only fish the Vancouver/Howe Sound/Sunshine Coast area. So, after July 15th, I plan to take my little tinny out to Gower Pt and west on quiet evenings and drift mooch/row with whole herring rigged as I’ve seen some do in Alaska and California - single 3/0 through the side of the nose then turned and buried back in the opposite side of the head. I like the look of the roll, and it seems to be less fuss than cut-plugging, and it’s just something different. Also, I long for the days of my youth when we fished light tackle quietly, with only the sound of the water lapping against the hull. I want to get back to that.

x2 . i got into a few last fall and they were dang tasty.

i also want to try some Mark pendlington style fly fishing for coho on Wilby Shoal and grants reef.

and when i do so, i’m going to slowly explain to my viewers every unnecessary detail right down to leader length and size.
I really want to do the coho on the fly as well, looks way too fun
