Thinking of taking my boys (ages 11 and 14) to Cougar Creek this summer and was looking for some tips on fishing the area, best times, etc etc. I have a newer 16.5' Double Eagle that I'm hoping will be suitable. Any input would be mucho appreciated.
Cheers

The search function(upper right)really helped me with this topic. Great place for families(calm waters) Moutcha Bay is a better choice for camping (costs more). Troll a shoreline until you get a hit, then work that spot. Watermelon spoons and plain white hootchies worked better than bait for me last year. July 20-Aug 10 should work.

Our family, 6 adults & 4 children (ages 1, 4, 5 & 7), have been going to the area for the last 7 years. For the first 4 years we rented a chalet at Moutcha Bay... since then, we have rented Bligh Island Lodge. We have 2 boats, an 18.5 Campion explorer and a 24' Hewescraft Searunner. One of the things we enjoy about the area is that you can always find protected waters to catch fish. Do the search that "tubber" suggests and you'll find the areas to fish. Last year... 6 days through Labour Day weekend... we had another great time. Most of our time fishing was at Burdwood Bay... and again with plenty of action. Your boat will be fine... just pay attention to the weather when you choose where to go. Let me know if you need more info....

I stayed in Jewit cove last year and fished in my 17 foot Malibu Tyee. No problems at all with the size of the boat. As mentioned above watch the weather and if you are heading out in the am watch out for fog.

Don't forget a couple of trout rods for the kids. There are always a gang of them fishing for mackrel off the docks. Have stayed at cougar creek about 5 times , great place. Fished the inside in a 16' boat, never any problems always lots of fish. Last year I upgraded to a 18.5 DE and we stayed at critter cove, they have everthing.Fished the outside for the first time, saw some small boats out there. Will be going again this year. Cant wait!

Coholips, have you ever been up that way before,it takes me about 5 to 6 hrs from shawnigan lk depending on how many stops on the way. There are some really steep hills just past gold river. Cougar creek can get busy at times and a few times had to camp in the parking lot which was fine, we were there to fish. Cougar creek is right in the middle of the inshore fishing, lots of times fishing in sight of the docks. Most people fish the mornings coming in at noon then heading out for the night bite. Critter Cove about 5 to 10 minutes away has tackle, bait and ice and a good place to eat. One year the kids were catching anchovies off the dock and selling them.
A word of caution once you go there you will keep wanting to go back.
Last year we fished bajo reef area and my 2 buddies forgot gravol, they didn't think they needed it, they could barely steer the boat or net all the fish i was catching:D

Awesome! Can't wait to go. I'm leaning towards Moutcha Bay Resort. Any idea how much further by boat to the inshore spots from Moutcha?

10 minutes from Moutcha to Cougar in an 11 foot whaler. (top speed 21 mph. Fishing can be good right around the point 5 minutes away. 1 hour to Burdwood which has more of a westcoast feel than the more inside areas which are like fishing in a big lake. Nice folks, good choice. Bring the traps.

Is the crabbing good near Moutcha or is it better prawning?

You can get a decent feed of both betweeen Princess Royal Point and Moutcha. In other words, throw your pots over on the way to the fishing grounds without having to detour much at all. If you're thinking you could save even more time by baiting your traps the night before and leaving them on the boat, don't, unless you want to catch a bear. :D

Moutcha bay can be good near the end of august with a mixture of clean and dark fish. We fished there one year, coudn't go earlier.Found the fish somewhat harder to catch the first couple of days, but once got them dialed in started to catch lots.I would rather go end of july or early august. My buddys son caught his first salmon about 7 yrs ago up there and it was well over 30lbs,he was 12 .Now he has to bring his own beer! Hopefully the reg's don't change and your still allowed 2 over .

moutcha is great! road is fine ,sleep grades {good brakes and cooling system is needed}try leaving at a cool time of the day when pulling out of camp .It`s a bit pricey but lots of sheltered moorage =piece of mind. Oh ya they have a freezer that keeps your catch cool but wont turn them into stiffy`s lol. Also time your arrival at high tide as boat launch is shallow.

tight lines

OK so due to some booking scew ups I have the choice of July 20-23 or August 9-12. Which of these 2 would be the better choice? Full moon is July 25 and August 24 as I've heard this can really impact fishing negatively. Any input would be much appreciated, thanks again.

I would pick the july dates, found the fishing great in nootka last two weeks of july, weather is nicer from my experiences.
