Nookta Sound Northern Coho Timing

I am looking at doing a Northern Coho trip between Sept 10-15 to Nookta and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on spots etc...also my understanding is the coho fishing has been slow so any updated info would be great. Thanks in advance.

Talked to a guy that is up there and says nothing any good comin through yet.
I was at Tahsis last year at that time and no northerns around. Talked to a local and he said it was not a good year. Planning on the same trip but I won't be going to Nooka or Esperenza.

just got back yesterday.
weather could have been a factor. was rainy and overcast.

Ferrer on Friday, 2 springs and a coho. no fish after low slack. stayed there all day and fish high tide. anchovy and green/white glow hooch
Coopte, hoiss and lighthouse Saturday, nothing..... anchovy, green/white hooch, spoons (cop car and silver) coho killers
Catalina island on sunday, nothing.......
Steamer point on monday morning, fished solo. double header. 2 dark springs on anchovy

Well that does not sound very promising but thanks for the info

if you get a chance to get to Ukee...we hit 50 coho give or take a few out at big bank...biggest was 10lb
they were hitting anything too

I was up at Shearwater from Aug 15 to the 23rd. It was a coho slayfest! No 20's but many good sized 13-15 lb'rs. Limited everyday but our first (which was a late start clustersnafu). Hitting in anyway possible....JDF heads with anchovies, some on hootchies, jughead and anchovy. it was crazy in that we would be trolling along with out a bite for a few minutes and decide to pop the rod to check bait and bam! a hit. Also had them hit the lure as I retrieved it along the surface.
Also hit a beauty 43.5 lb spring on the 'pop the rod' method. Who knew?photo-4.jpg

Ya, well, I wasn't upsidedown when the picture was taken....not sure what happened there. anyone know how to fix that?
Also, the downside was we could not keep any more after the third day.

i know this might be a dumb question but is a big hog like that as good eating as a smaller spring?

Not as good. Not bad eating but the meat tends to be a little coarser. Many anglers after getting a few big ones under their belt let them go.

The vast majority of Coho are still offshore.
I was out a few weeks ago and the numbers were ridiculous.
Need rain to bring the masses in.

How far offshore were you going samjoe? I'm heading out there in a couple days. going with a few guys from kamloops also... alot can change in a few weeks... I was there a little less than a month ago. did well on springs inside. not a sniff of coho. but didn't head offshore.

Sorry I was not off of Nootka but up north near Brooks.
We were out on the 50 fathom and further.
I am thinking they should be thick at Bajo by now.
Anyone I have talked to that have been fishing offshore are calling them the plague.

It was tough, we bonked and filleted it and as we were doing that there was the moment of 'you know, we should have put this one back'. But it was the first Tyee and.....what are ya gonna do?
I can't imagine it could be better tasting than the nice big coho we ate for our dinners.

thxs for that Samnjoe!
we will definitely be fishing the bajo reef area and if we can't find them there we'll head offshore, weather permitting.
That is if we can't find them inside noootka at the usual places...

Can't release the first tyee! It does get easier after that though.

Check out the Nootka/ Esperanza fishing Report. You will find that the rain changed everything as it relates to Coho in Esperanza Inlet. They are in & lots of them. Have not seen anything over 14.5lb yet, so if the Northerns are coming it will most likely happen around Sept. 15
