Tuna fishing is wide open in the Los Cabos area right now. Pic was shared to me, unfortunately I wasn’t in on the festivities

I think that is an understatement! It's about as crazy as it can get I think. In a couple hours we landed 25 fish that were between 20-60 pounds yesterday.
Loving your posts man, can't believe how good the fishing is.....Betty probably doesn't see you too much these days hahaha

Just leaving Cabo today . Cold water on the pacific side and very spotty action on the marlin/ dorado on the pacific side, so we decided to forgo a big sportfisher and ended up organizing 4 pangas for my buddy’s groomsman ( was down for a wedding ) .

There is a good bite going on at the iman bank . Early morning bite then tapers off . It’s a sardina show ( chumming and fly lining live and dead baits ) . It’s all about getting your sardines early from the Pangeros. One of our boats struggled to get their sardines early and were late to the party and only caught some bonitas. Every other boat had 2 - 4 quality sized yellowfin ( 40 - 80 lb range ) .Brian is doing a great job following Eric’s passing ! Great company to work with.

Next time I get a shot at these fish will be July 31 for a three day overnight trip to the tres Maria’s on the No Tuna No Chinga with Danny Osuna.

It’s been an incredible year for the yellow fins out of La Playita. Any sign of the seiners that were there 2 days ago? I heard the locals were going to confront them and run them off

I had asked Brian and he said they were out on the Gordo seining for skippies . We didn’t see anything

They can have all the skip jacks they want. Tried cooking and eating one once. Just once.

So that's where they were. Nothing doing when I was in Barra de Navidad early March. Talking to local skippers and friends, it sounds like they were around in January only. We elected to beach fish and took one inshore charter. Found bonitas while trolling near reefs, then pulled the gear, drifted back in and did some sight casting. Fun day, those guys pull amazingly hard for their size.

Sashimi they're incredible if taken care of properly. They don't sear well.

I've put out trays with Yellowfin, Bluefin and Skippies all sahimi'd up and 9/10 prefer the Skippies.
Well OK then! Will try next time. Although the guides don't care to target them.

I agree , very firm almost deep purple meat ! The white Bonita ( with the sharp teeth ) are amazing aswell , meat more akin to our albacore .

It usually slows down in February until early April but never did this year

Question, have fished with Gordo banks and Pisces tons , but I am heading down for a quick birthday trip in April , and want to fish out of San Jose as the fishing is usually better in that area that time of year . Love fishing with the Brickstons, but my fishing partner would prefer to fish out of a larger express , or sportsfisher style boat ( Cabo / Viking etc ) . I’m not familiar with any operations out of San Jose that offer boats of this caliber , anyone have any recommendations ?

I don't but just as a suggestion that if you want to fish Sea of Cortes/San Jose del Cabo/Gordo Banks area and you don't already have accom. in San Jose, then you could do a trip to Gordo Bank using the a larger vessel from the Cabo fleet. A little bit longer trip doing it that way obviously so extra fuel but to put into perspective it's similar travel dist. to Gordo Bank from Cabo marina as going to Golden Gate from Cabo - both about 27NM I think. This obviously only makes sense if fishing a larger Cabo Express or Viking is needed and you are unsuccessful finding it in San Jose .... plus it gives access to the much larger Cabo fleet as compared to San Jose del Cabo so more choices overall.

Good suggestion ! Last year in April we were fishing YFT down at the Iman bank , a bit further towards the cortez, and you basically had to rush to get your sardina, rush to the bank and get baits in ASAP for a shot at 3 - 4 nice ones before the sun got too high in the sky and the bite shut off . Might have to talk to the Pisces boys about leaving the slip a bit early ..

More recently I have booked captains directly via recommendations. Last 2 trips to Cabo the captain/boat were not part of an agent's fleet as far as I know. I have heard Pisces has some great charter boats/captains. With all those trips with them you obviously like them! 2 years ago our captain and deckhand were great (Capt. Jobe Villavicencio on 36' El Diablo) but he's now running a 45 Cabo which was just not a good fit for our group this November - Pricey for a smaller group. I booked Pepe Jaramillo of Ole Ole Sportfishing on his 33' Blackfin well in advance of heading down there. I have attached some photos from that November 2024 trip just to get the adrenaline flowing! .

Aces mentioned Abigail Sportfishing in San Jose so that may work for you although looks like all their boats are Super Pangas and CC;s with one 28' Carolina Classic - not quite a 40' Viking or Cabo Express but the prices look more economical out of San Jose, even considering boat size.

I will add that Gordo Banks can book independent cruisers if that what you need.

I will also report that we are experiencing a bit of a cold front as a result of the Santa Ana winds which has slowed the fishing/catching significantly. The water has cooled and the fish/sardines have moved down(south) and out farther.
