Humboldt Squid- Garry Cooper show

So me and a buddy got out yesterday and tried this. This was new territory for both of us. we were told find the krill, under the krill is the hake, and under the hake are squid. we ended up jigging in about 575-600’ fow and we managed to get four squid. the taxman chewed one in half on the way up.

it was very exciting g considering g this was an entirely new fishery
Good work for your first time out!!

Very cool!
How deep was your gear in the 575/600 water?
we were in 1100 feet of water. our jigs were down 575-600’. this was the bottom of the bait/ krill/ hake cloud which went on for miles. the whales were insane. we must have counted 10 humpbacks . forgot to mention we dropped in at kitty on the way home and jigged up two springs in quick order so it was a good day

An excellent day!

Thanks for the motivation to get out there and try this again! I caught two lings over in the Thrasher area in June that had these good size squid in their bellies. Both Lings caught around 100’ so I guess the squid come up shallower at night. I suspect they are spread out through the Straight and just follow food.

We caught ling and hali off Esperanza, in June, that had these in their bellies. Would have been 1 foot bodies, not including tentacles, and beaks the size of a half golf ball.
