lol yeah he plays it pretty smooth. That is a monster squid!I would have thrown her overboard. That guy is one cool cucumber.
I was kind of hoping it would clamp into his arm, just to hear the reaction.lol yeah he plays it pretty smooth. That is a monster squid!
it has happened in march to july in bam many times. very impossible to know when. i watch for the sea lion invasion and then cruise the harbour checking the heavily lit areas.Crushing Opals now? My kid really wants to go squid fishing. We keep missing the timing in Bamfield in June. Would like to fish for them here in Victoria. Trying to figure out time of year and location. We had lings spitting up good size squid in Brentwood last April and was going to try that timing and location this year but would be game to try sooner if they might be around?
I've only ever seen them once at the Saltspring island public dock around Canada Dayit has happened in march to july in bam many times. very impossible to know when. i watch for the sea lion invasion and then cruise the harbour checking the heavily lit areas.
exactly how to fish them.As a kid in the 80’s/90’s there were a couple years where they would come into Cowichan Bay. Two people could fill a 5 G pail in a couple hours.
We would tie 5 - 6 table hooks on our line with a Buzz Bomb or something else for weight at the bottom and cast through the schools when they swam by. Others would use herring rakes to load up.
Good fun, good eating and good bait!
This is a great (informative l) vid, I was just going to post it here but see you beat me to it.So here’s a very interesting video on squid fishing. Maybe these guys on on this site. What’s cool about this video is that the size of these squid are ideal for eating and the depths and location are so manageable. No need to go out in the middle of Georgia Straight in a 1000 ft of water. Wonder if English Bay holds spawning squid?
Ha, this is likely how I need to approach it as getting a ‘bite’ took a lot of effort!exactly how to fish them.

My boat is in shop so did not get out that weekend. They come in to Sidney, Saanich Inlet and other areas for sure. Just figuring out when?
Hopefully next weekend. LOL! I will report back.
We tried pat bay and deep cove yesterday squid chasing a kayak report of 50 caught from two weeks ago. Couldn’t see much worth jigging for. Messaged back and forth with the kayaker and we didn’t see anything on my sounder that looked like what he described. He said in 100-150 feet of water, he was seeing them everywhere. I need to get my 3 in 1 Lowrance transducer setup couldn’t seem to get away from the Airmar setting. My boat is in shop so did not get out that weekend.
Went out in friends boat yesterday to try out luck in Saanich inlet. We trolled through some areas with the sounder and stopped to jig over various bait balls.
Both my son and I had a couple of taps but probably not squid. He had something on for a few seconds but did not act like squid so probably a cod grabbing the squid jig.
After a couple hours we finally found some squid… on the menu at mill bay pub. So enjoyed those snd some chicken wings. Tide was low so picked a couple dozen oysters then pulled 3 crab traps which were loaded with 10 keeper crab.
So pub squid for lunch and oysters, crab and Caesar salad for dinner. Amazing day on the water. So nice to get some salt air in the lungs.
I am hopeful for April- June when I have heard is spawning time and better chances.
Meanwhile will be listening for squid sightings.
