How do I connect my lowrance elite. 7 to my uniden dsc marine radio? Any help on what wires to what would be great.

Thanks fellas
Chris.

Chris

If your radio wiring is these colours

You should be able to do this

Uniden
Orange: NMEA OUT (-)
Black: Ext Speaker (-)/GND
Green: GPS Data IN(+)
Red: External Speaker (+)
Bare wire: Ground
Yellow: NMEA OUT (+)

Lowrance HDS-7 Wiring diagram:
Yellow: TX (+)
Blue: TX (-)
Orange: RX (+):
Green: RX (-)
Shield (ground)

VHF to HDS7
Orange: NMEA OUT (-) Orange: RX (+):
Green: GPS Data IN(+) Blue: TX (-)
Yellow: NMEA OUT (+) Green: RX (-)

That should work.

If not what radio do you have?

You should also apply to Industry Canada for your MMSI number.

A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is a series of nine digits which are sent in digital form over a radio frequency channel in order to uniquely identify ship stations, shipearth stations, coast stations, coast earth stations, and group calls. These identities are formed in such a way that the identity or part thereof can be used by telephone and telex subscribers connected to the general telecommunications network to call ships automatically

It also automatically identifies your boat in an emergency if you flip the "Distress" Button and Coast Guard knows who is in distress, what kind of boat you are in and where you are (Long. and Lat. coordinates).

Yes Kisinana that is what I have for wiring in my VHF book. So do I just connect the 3 wires to the other 3 wires and that's all I need to connect to make it work? What do I do with the rest of the wires? Finaddict I do plan on getting an mmsi number ASAP. Just trying to get it all figured out. Thanks guys as always.

Yes not all wires are connected. You will then have to get your MMSI# and program that into your radio. At least that is how my Lowrance was hooked up.

Does it say anywhere on my elite 7 that they are connected?

The other wires coming from your VHF should be power and ground as well as for a remote speaker and a PA if equipped.

If the wires are connected correctly, your latitude and longitude should show up on your VHF screen. I have a Garmin connected to my DSC VHF and nothing shows up on the Garmin, only the VHF.

I have been powered up and grounded for a while just trying to connect to GPS. Nothing shows up on my VHF so I must of did something wrong. Double checked wires as Kisinana said but still not working.

You're going to have to get your manuals out for both units, Chris. You will probably need to get into the settings menu on your GPS to ensure it knows you've got the VHF connected via an NMEA 0183 port, set the proper baud rate etc. Unfortunately, it's one of those "when all else fails, read the manual" situations.

The manual only has one paragraph on it. Looked online and it said the same wires as above. I guess on my boat we will leave it up to fate if we have problems on the water. Thanks guys I appreciate the help.

Chris I talked to Mike at Harbour Chandler when I hooked mine up. I do have a extenal speaker on the rear deck and I do believe that the extra wires some of them did go to it. I don't believe that you will see anything show on VHF itself. Mine is a Standard Horizion VHF/AIS so on the VHF it does show the Lat/Long so I know it's hooked up right as it's getting the info from the GPS. I do remember that I did have to change a setting on the VHF as Bigbruce has said.

Umm - it has been many years since I hooked mine up, but I remember something about enabling the right 'Com Port' in your sys setup menu AND you need to selct the right Baud rate ( speed )

Hey Chris,
I've done a few of these over the years and this should get you going
first you may have to go into the lowrance menus
and make sure com port 1's baud shoud be set to 4800
then you will want to hook the yellow from the VHF to the yellow of the Elite
then connect the Shielding wire from the lowrance to the green of the Elite,
its basically only 2 wires you will use,
hope this helps Tim

Edit info added and wiring corrected

try this on the lowrance
press menu twice, scroll down to and select nmea0183, check all boxes under the gps section, set baud to 4800 if its not already

GPS Verification
If the GPS receiver is correctly connected and it transmits valid data, the display shows GPS
Data OK. Press ENT-1W25W to open the GPS status screen and see detailed GPS data:
