Chinook hatchery's

Just an observation, but i am very thankful for fish hatchery's.
Almost all the winter fish we catch are clipped. Without hatchery work,
both U.S. and Canadian, we would have very few Salmon to catch.

Amen! The problem here in B.C. is DFO is onto their Wild Salmon policy which will have predictable and disastrous results. Little wonder that our neighbours to the south are now seeing huge returns coming for 2010 and 2011.

Personally, I would be extremely happy to pay an additional $10 - $20 per year as a hatchery surcharge as long as every cent went into additional production.

Somehow we need to get this onto the SFAB agenda.

You do know most of your “private” hatcheries have doing a very decent job the last few years and they accept donations! I bet they would accept that $10-$20 - or more, with most being spent on the fish! :)

Problem i see Kelly is that the $$$ go directly to the feds,
and we all know what a bang up job they do with our tax dollars.
I would also be in favor of paying more if i knew it would go directly
to the hatchery's.

If you could do an audit you would find that money you are paying for salmon tags is going to encourage fish farming.:(:(

The money going straight to enhancement instead of to the feds :D:D:D :D That will never happen. It's makes way too much sense and is too logical. Goverment doesn't do anything that makes sense and logically. I would be happy to pay more on my license if I knew it was going to enhance stocks and would make a difference!!!

DFO and their provincial counter parts stand on their track record [}:)]...no wonder we are all very skeptical, and for very good reason. Notwithstanding, we did manage to get almost all the $ collected for freshwater licenses put directly into the Freshwater Fisheries Society which was set up to run the provincial hatchery program.

This is a model that could easily work with DFO, as long as the Feds were willing to step back and let a private business or society take over and run the facilities.

I agree with Kelly, I would gladly pay more than the $10 - $20 proposed, IF the cash went directly into a fund that the recreational fishermen had input into how they were managed. That would require a governance model to be set up so there was an actual business entity set up, with a proper Board of Directors to provide Management oversight. If we could get this kind of model (a far better one than the Province set up with the Fresh Water Fisheries Society), then I would gladly donate more cash beyond a regular license fee. I know I'm not alone in this...there are so many hard core fishermen, lodge operators, and charter operators who would line up to cash up.

We were able to accomplish that with the B.C. Government, so there is no reason why no with the current Conservative Gov't. There is a good business model when you link the change in how our hatchery program with the economic spin offs and benefits accruing.

I think we need to get the main board of the SFAB fired up and hot under the collar on this issue so we can apply pressure within the current process for change.

We all agree we would gladly spend the money if it went back into Salmon production.
Like Charlie said, there are lots of "private" hatcheries. They are run by volunteers and they rely on donations to operate. They will gladly take your cash and put it to good used.
Better yet, become a member of one and donate some time as well.
Saying that we need this board or that board to do something is like flogging a dead horse. Join those boards and participate if you want change.
And thanks to our American neighbors 29 out of the 33 fish that we brought to the boat this week were hatchery clipped Chinook

I believe most hatchery funding for Salmon falls under SEP-The funding is some where around 121 million a year and has not changed in over 20 years. No cost of living increases for anything:(
The SFAB process really has no control over htchery sending or allocation of moneys being spend. This is what I hear

I help raise and donate money for our local hatchery and challenge all other anglers on Vancouver Island to do the same. I know that Goldstream and Sooke can always use the money. There are other projects on the Island just as needy and can use your $10 donation.
