Boats on Used Victoria and Other Areas

Is it just me or does pretty much every DE 175 on used vic or craiglist look like a 165. I owned a 16' DE and I swear that boat looks exactly the same. I guess it was what someone wanted though...

Aside from the 1' difference in length and maybe a few inches in beam
they are pretty much identical

Full disclosure, I've owned the 16' and not the 17' so I perhaps don't have all the experience on this one... but...

I've heard the extra weight, beam and length of the 17' makes a pretty considerable difference to the ride. The 16' I had was a well built little toy on the ocean. I wouldn't consider one again in the future cause it was just too small. Based on my experience the value of a 17 should be a couple $1000 more than a comparable 16. To me anyway.

I've seen a lot of people selling 16' DE advertised as "17.5'". I don't know if this is on purpose or not, but aside from the length, the gunnels are also 3" lower on the 16'. You can usually tell in photos by the height of the gunnel at the transom. Further the DE 176 model is NOT 17.5' LOA it is 17'-1" (and the 166 is 16'-1"). The 176 is a heavier, deeper v than the DE 166 and 4" wider. The 176 is a dryer, more stable boat in choppy water, however is heaver to tow and needs much more outboard horsepower.

In 1996 DE changed the design of the 176 and raised the windshield by about 4" creating more comfortable seating and better driving position. You don't see a lot of this model year or later up for sale on Used Vic or CL. Most of them are 80's era and not so easy to tell apart in photos. The 17 feels like a much bigger boat if you have been in both.

That boat has been for sale for a long time. I don't know if it's the jet drive or what that is scaring everyone, but have seen this boat for sale for almost a year. If not more.

That Almar is a fresh water boat. A Hamilton 212 is not intended for or designed to stand up to extended use in saltwater. You could probably yank the engine and pump and sell them for decent coin, depending on condition. Put that money towards a pod and outboard.

The price on that lifetimer 16 seems way high for what is probably at least a 10 year old boat. In thinking you could probably get something comparable brand new for not very much more.
