2025 Bamfield and Barkley Sound Reports

Mosaic is unsafe for all traffic, prompting Mosaic to close the route with a section of the road being defined as a No Work Zone by BC Wildfire Services. Falling rocks, dangerous trees and a fire-damaged slope are presenting exceptionally challenging conditions, and there is no timeline for reopening the road in its current configuration. Mosaic has asked for assistance from the Province about solutions to make the road passable for public and commercial users. Further technical assessment is required to determine the timeline for any immediate fix to provide for public access.

Currently, the detour route through to Youbou remains the only available alternative ground route. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is working with the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness and other partners, including Mosaic, to enhance the level of maintenance given increased public use during the detour.

“We take the safety of road users extremely seriously and there have been multiple geotechnical engineering assessments completed of the current situation,” said D’Arcy Henderson, chief operating officer, Mosaic. “Based on initial technical assessments, BC Wildfire Service has determined the road is currently unsafe for all transit. Safety remains our top priority in all decisions.”

Once Mosaic is given clearance from BC Wildfire Service to go back on the lands, additional geotechnical assessments can be completed, which will better position the company to determine when slope restoration efforts and road repairs can begin and will allow a timeline for this work to be established.

“We acknowledge and appreciate the primacy of safety that Mosaic has always held close as a core value, and we also want to underline the level of co-operation and communication that they have demonstrated throughout this whole emergency situation,” said John Jack, Chief Councillor of Huu-ay-aht First Nations, and chair of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. “While the situation itself is packed with challenges, we look forward to surmounting them with partners such as Mosaic and the provincial government.”

The 76 km long Bamfield Main Road is owned by both public and private entities, including 15 km managed by Mosaic.

If MOSAIC is involved, the road is doomed. It will be closed for much longer than necessary. Terrible company, ruining back road access everywhere.

Fished yesterday at Swale early morning, slow, then moved up and eventually got to Effingham/Cree for afternoon. At Effingham we had a large spring on that we netted just as the hoochie flew out of the mouth, and as the netter raised it the net head slipped off and flipped over and the fish got dumped and released, netter was able to grab the bag and retrieve it. Scotty Guide series net (garbage, 2nd time this happend and we made sure pin was locked).... after losing that fish we stayed positive and 5 minutes later a big double header with 82 and 86 cm springs.... buddy was holding the net in the air waiting for port rod holder to bring his in which as coming in hot, my fish ended up leaping airborne way behind the boat then again much closer, reeling hard as he's on a mission, then leaped again and jumped over buddies line and caused panic as i figured next it would be swimming into the downrigger not yet retrieved... last jump was behind the boat and the fish leaped and went airborne right into the net buddy was able to angle it to allow entry... insane! we had boats around and were hoping someone witnessed that or maybe had a video going, big crap shot but never know... ended with limits for 4. fish came hard and fast within 1.5 hours then nothing.. so fun.

Had a great Sunday fishing Austin. Dropped lines at 1:45pm and had our springs for four people 8-22lbs and a mix of clipped and unclipped coho by 3:30pm. We started running anchovies and a flash fly, eventually switched to mooching cut plugs when we ran out of anchovies. Springs were holding closer to bottom in 90-120 feet of water. Amazing final afternoon of fishing Barkley sound this season. Can’t wait for next year.

Got back from Bamfield last night after four epic days of fishing. Had four springs in the boat before we docked at Mckay's. Small green glow Coyote spoon and hoochies did the damage for limits of springs everyday: Ellis Island, the Wall, Swale, Sanford, and Danvers on the way home. A white cuttlefish hoochie was good; a Yo-Zuri M93 cuttlefish was great. Two springs at 20 pounds and a few fat coho as well. Right around or at 50 feet deep worked best when the sun was up; as shallow as 38 first thing in the morning.

Yeah!!

I guess I can not look at a calender. Off to Barkley sound lodge in the morning tomorrow! 4 days of fun and fishing
Leaving tomorrow am. Easily limited on springs and coho for all (24) of our group. BSL was once again great - our 8th year here. All of the usual areas producing. We actually had a Tyee (30 1/2 lbs) as our derby winner - caught off Mears - not by me unfortunately. My best was 23.5 also off Mears. Think we cleaned out the bar. Bring reinforcements!
