2025 Bamfield and Barkley Sound Reports

FYI - we tried to haul into Bamfield via Lk Cowichan this morning and got turned around at Youbou. It was a hard “no” on non-essential (road) travel into Bamfield for “non-locals” from the guys with the flouro vests. Fair enough

Not surprised. People should be really going through inlet right now if you need to get there especially with boat and trailer. The inlet isn't scary. Easy run plus you can fuel up before you go.
The Regional District and Huuayaht First Nation are requesting that tourists do not go to Bamfield at this time. There are concerns about food and fuel availability. Unless you're fully self-supported, it's best to give Bamfield space until things are under control.

Many places are self sufficient so check where you’re staying or you may not be taking cancellations and you may be out of your deposit.
Good points thanks. We’re staying with someone who is fully self-sufficient with generators etc. and would like us to honour or reservation. We’re heading in loaded with extra fuel and food for them and us.

Just got back from 5 days in Bamfield. Overall fishing on the inside is still quite slow with the water warm at 12-16C on the surface and still brown most places. We fished Beale, Whittlestone, Austin, Cree and the wall. Using mostly Skinny G herring aid and gold nugget spoons from 40-120 ft. Lots of small springs and coho to shake off. Offshore was more productive with bigger springs and coho but the wind and sea state didn’t cooperate so our 2 trips offshore were rough! Used bigger spoons and plugs out there as the bait was bigger. Lots of coho so hard to get your gear down and not end up getting hit by coho. The rain forecasted there this weekend may bring a lot of fish inside hopefully.

Had to leave early today as Bamfield has had no power for 2 days due to the China Creek fire taking out the main road and power and comms lines. The only road access is by logging road to Lake Cowichan and they are trying to let only essential travel to Bamfield now. They are bringing in generators now as they figure the power lines will not be back up for at around a month. Let’s hope this rain this weekend helps put out this fire fast!!

Had a couple friends along today. Started at pill point and good action right off. 10 lbs. Coho on gold herring aide at 73ft. and 24 pound spring on white hoochie 54ft. lots of smalls to release. Insane weeds so moved up to diolock, slow at first but much cleaner water. Got another 10 and 13 spring white hoochie 54ft as well as another 10 lbs. Coho on anchovy at 58ft. Many smalls and lost a couple screamers. White hoochies were busier and bigger fish than the spoons.

I just talked to McKay Bay lodge. We are scheduled to arrive (by boat from Port Alberni) on Monday. Cheryl said they are running on generators, have the freezer going, fuel at the dock and are cooking meals. The only problems are laundry and hot water for showers. So we may bring up solar showers and sleeping bags. This is prime time for the lodges and they will be glad to keep their businesses going if they can!

Interesting stance from some Bamfield businesses going against government and First Nation directions. My host pretty much said business as usual, running on generators, food, freezer and gas available. I imagine they don’t want to lose deposits and issue refunds but it certainly puts non residents and locals without the luxuries in a bad position. And what about the first responders fighting the fires?

If clients of lodges are getting there by boat so not hindering fire fighters or other road access I can’t see any downside for them being there. They are supporting the lodge owners and all of their staff financially during the prime time for fishing. They are out in their boats all day so not demanding services from the town and I’m sure all the employees who are being employed by these guests are happy for a paycheck.

Gotta make hay while the sun shines. The lodges are pretty much self-sufficient and not using community resources, and especially now their guests will be coming by water, staying in the lodge, and fishing all day. I'd expect very little impact, if any, on the community.

We just left Bamfield yesterday. Stayed at McKay Bay. They are doing their best to keep things going but it’s certainly stressful. Brian is managing generators 18 hours a day and fuel was and maybe still is a bit of an issue. When the tanker came in boats were circling around for their chance to fill up. Bring some jerry cans with a little extra to make sure you can run the inlet back up. Also wouldn’t hurt to call Cheryl prior to heading out to see if there is anything she needs brought out.
Fishing-wise, it was slower on the inside than typical but we managed to find some decent springs. Harbor entrance and Bamfield wall right at the inlet were best. Blue hoochies and blue flashers for some reason were working better than anything else, maybe due to water color with algae? Others found the same and I never would’ve thought to try that color. White was ok, too. Bait didn’t do much. We found very small bait in all our fish so maybe the anchovies were too big. Deeper was better, 50-70.
